When I first came across "No Support Linux Hosting" a couple of years back, I couldn't stop laughing. 'What a novel idea!', I thought.

On demand, self-managed hosting services usually indicate that the typical tech support response is usually going to be: "Just click that little red button in your control panel and reinstall the OS, and all will be well".

Generally not what the customer was praying to hear.

After all, the responsibility for the management of the machinery ends with that machinery being up and available in a self-managed environment. Anything beyond that, and the customer is entitled to break their machines any way they like - whether on purpose or accidentally.

So the **No Support** branding makes for great marketing, because that's exactly what on demand, self-managed services are anyway (yes, you can elect to pay more for hand holding or even managed services, with some managed services plans meaning you're not allowed to touch your own server).

This story has made it all the way from TorrentFreak to Ziff Davis, highlighting just how pervasive this takedown, and two others, were.

Most providers incorporate active #disaster_recovery plans including #backups and #snapshots of their customer's machinery even if the customer doesn't pay for those additional upsells.

Why? Because if something happens at the infrastructure level it's the provider's responsibility to get things back online ASAP, and if the customer blows something up it presents an opportunity for the provider to come riding in like a knight in shining armor and rescue the irresponsible customer by charging just enough of a shitload of money so their customer's business operations don't entirely fail. A penalty, so to speak, for the customer not electing to subscribe to the #backup or #snapshot services before #disaster struck.

So... Why wasn't that the case here?

Or perhaps, as the article suggests, maybe there was some hidden complicity?

Since there are inferences to #piracy and #copyright violations, one might point out that several emerging technologies and initiatives in the world of file sharing are now exploring, and/or deploying, infrastructure incorporating #IPFS and #blockchain technologies - a possible game changer for Internet #archives and the ability to affect #DMCA takedowns in the future.

So let's break out the bon bons and #popcorn, pick a comfy seat, and settle in to watch how the #plot of this #movie unfolds, shall we?

I hoped that helps! :)

Nor should you have that need my friend. It'll get patched, and it's a limited #vul anyway.

Screen is real #GNU, but it's had several maintainers and some claim it's a bit of spaghetti code after all these decades.

I originally began my migration to #tmux soon after its release by the #OpenBSD folks and in there beginning used to even remap the keybinding to ^a to mimic #screen, but now, on machines that I use #Byobi on, I map that to ^b to mimic tmux, which is what it's actually built over.

Now, here's something I do that you might be interested in...

http://northtech.us/content/20110311/adding-convenient-layers-persistent-abstraction-simplify-remote-administration

I've been a package maintainer for #TWIN for almost twenty years, and while it pretty much just languished in relative obscurity at #Sourceforge until just a few years ago it has enjoyed a considerable surge in popularity since being rehomed at #GitHub.

I like to use it in its own, regular, virtual Linux console, away from X-Windows, or I'll attach via X-forwarding remotely. That way, I'll just <Ctrl>+<Alt>+Fn# to get out of my local X Server Session, ssh into that box, and attach. I'll tile several TWinTerms inside of which I run my tmux or screen sessions.

You might want to make sure you're running #gpm for your mouse support ;)

You should give it a go. It's fucking fun shit. And do please tell me what you think okay? It's a bit different, and you guys remember coz it was originally written for #DOS in the #386 days, but if you've ever networked DOS to #UNIX machines using #Quarterdeck's #DESQview/X you should be right at home πŸš€

Nowadays, development is once again quite active and you can visit the project at GitHub:

Ah, hi Kashya :)

It's actually a really old 16bit video arcade game from the 80's that was retooled for one of the earliest television game consoles.

In their rush to bring it to market, they apparently hired non English speaking translators who butchered the pregame narrative, eventually spawning one of the biggest and most enduringly viral of Internet memes over the past 30 years lolz.

If you know what it is and get the joke, then you're "one of the kewl geeks".

So now you know, and when you go out in public and say, "All you base are belong to us", and you get funny expressions from people asking what you meant, just smile and walk away, leaving them wondering, yet knowing that something just went right over the tops of their head lolz.

It's kinda like those people that say, "Hey I clicked on that link but all I got was some shitty music video that kept coming up called, 'Never Gonna Give You Up', what the fuck?"

What's funny is that those folks just told everyone that they got "RickRolled", without ever even realizing that their lack of knowing this is what the joke is all about.

Everybody gets Rickrolled from time to time, but acknowledging that you know it just happened to you is your flame retardant suit, so to speak.

The song has well over a billion views, which, depending on his publishing contract, may have already retired his fricken' grandchildren!

This particular version, has over 863 million views:

Hi Grant,

I'm interested in any links you might be able to provide leading to the GPL you think you read, and we'll do what we can to correct this issue.

Why? Because that phrase nor any part of it exists in either version 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0 of the GNU General Public License.

To be clear, I would steer you towards:

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.en.html

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.en.html

Those three links are definitive, official texts for all three versions of the license.

Please refer to those texts for future reference.

OMFG this is so cute!

For those of you who *really* know me, you are already aware that I forgoed medical school, even though I was a shoe in, coz I was informed that I would not be selected for a PhD program in Biological Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography back when I attended UCSD.

Ling story short, I wanted to count fucking fish, not stitch people up.

And I am still, at heart, a wanna-be Marine Biologist.

And this little ditty I scraped from elsewhere here in the Fediverse just warmed my icy fricken' heart. I want to share it with you now, all of my friends and even my frienemies, and ask if any of you can say that you've never done this yourselves, lolz.

I just wanna bring a bit of love and a smile to your beautiful faces... Truly.

Yah, we're really all just one big happy fucking family, and not so different from one another. Truly!

I hope you enjoy, and that this short video brings a smile to your face and all of your friends that you share this with!

After six very long months for many that have been waiting and hoping, a #Framasoft sponsored project has finally been released in the form of the latest version of #Fedilab (v2.38.1) on F-Droid!

Fedilab, is an #Android client to access the distributed #Fediverse, consisting of social networking platforms including photo sharing and video hosting, blogging aggregation and sharing services.

A couple of really kewl new features become available in this latest stable version, both are really kewl, but only one is actually listed in the release notes, so let's start with that:

* #New_post_notifications are available as a new feature you can elect to implement on a case by case basis, for the accounts you follow. Yet another feature present in most social networks and forum software that has been around for ages and still not implemented on most #Fediverse platforms (it does already exist on #Friendica instances).

*The other major upgrade, although not really a new feature is seamless and triangle #translation_services that facilitate making and maintaining friendships with others worldwide, regardless if there's a common language between parties. This feature was introduced a long time ago and supported exclusively by Fedilab, using the Yandex engines' free services...

Until those free services wetter terminated, and the translation feature languished for much of the last year with an interesting future.

Well, Fedilab has just rebased their language translation services integrating with #Libretranslate, and I must say it's is noted lightning fast and flawless, as much as translations can be anyway πŸ˜‰

Don't forget to pickup the latest version of Fedilab at F-Droid :)

As an added bonus, you can even stay abreast of the bleeding edge of Fedilab development by enabling their own F-Droid repo where you can obtain the very latest, including beta versions of of Fedilab, and you can do this in just a couple of quick clicks at: https://fdroid.fedilab.app/

I hope that helps! :)

You don't need to. #Amazon makes its own business product solution decisions - like eviscerating big box brick and mortar bookstores and then deploying their own.

#Netflix was placed in this precarious situation some time ago, when Amazon had studied their business product model enough and deployed Prime Video, and that's when Netflix saw the writing on the wall, acknowledging Amazon's typical #predatory M.O.

So they leveraged #Spinnaker and #diversified, spreading their footprint across several independent data center operations so as not to be #deplatformed. This was, of course, long before K8s, but that irony was not lost on savvy business opportunitists like the folks at former #RightScale, who made this the foundation of their business model in support of #enterprises they provided services for.

It was big #tech_news at the time, yet hardly even acknowledged as any sort of historical footnote now, made even more significant by the comically instant #deplatforming of Parler a couple of weeks back... Which begs the question: what kind of idiots would base their entire enterprise scale on a single infrastructure provider?

To me, the word that comes to mind is, *dumbshit* - and as #Ron_White is famous for saying, "You just can't fix stupid".

Oh! Gee willickers Mr. Wilson, look at all those #dumbasses trying to de-emphasize #distributed, #federating, small instance based #social_networks based on #FOSS!

#Muahahaha! I am #Satan!

And if FOSS is Satan, as #Microsoft used to portray it and the world of #Linux as... Well then, all I have to say about it is:

I would recommend, for you anyway my friend, and in this order...

* Slackware -current (will be the closest to what you're already used to with #OpenBSD). Get familiar with https://sbopkg.org , which supports #queuefiles for dependency resolution, and the underlying source build system at https://slackbiilds.org too.

At the distro layer there is #Slackpkg and Slackpkg+ for maintaining and customizing your OS installation: https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Slackpkg

* #Arch Linux - I can't express how much both n00bs and gurus alike love this distro, with arguably the best supporting documentation available in the Linux world.

* #Gentoo - you should be a bit familiar with this model, although the olden days of starting off from a stage 1 CD image are long since past, yet there's a lot to learn there too that I think you might find interesting, by familiarizing yourself with one of the last truly source based Linux distributions.

And finally...

* #Debian -testing , a bit boring perhaps for you, at least at first, but this will provide you with a great appreciation and understanding for how and why many of the other popular contemporary distros work.

All four recommendations above are, in fact, rolling distros, the maintenance of which in #enterprise_production environments requires a bit more care and attentiveness on the part of you, the #SysAdmin; yet all four are quite suitable for just such production environments in the capable hands of competent staff and run in perpetuity for years - decades even, to be sure. I've got #Slackware servers running enterprises that started off back in Slackware 10 and were installed from a stack of floppy disks.

I know that you are the sort of person who likes to see what makes things tick, so this is my custom recommendation for you.

Really, what I want to say here is shame on #Amandine_Le_Pape and #Matthew_Hodgson, the BDFLs and creators of Matrix, for even allowing #Element to be available in the Google Playstore - Is the Irony lost on you?

But I can't. I understand. Because it was, at the time, the only vehicle they could use to popularize Matrix.

But that time is passed, #Google, #Faceplant, #InstaSPAM, #Whassup , #Twatter, and many others are hemorrhaging profusely; exsanguination through the mass panicky evacuations of its userbase to some nobler, loftier, fairer and deserving places on the Internet, so don't fret folks, this is a sign of very good things bourne out of the Evil that are the monolithic silos that have stolen, packaged, inventoried, and distributed your identity and privacy.

These types of occurrences are merely the deadly grasping at straws, or anyone on the surface of the water who tries to reach out to these drowning, diabolical industries - make no mistake, they are the person drowning who will pull you down with them if you accept their apologies or peace offerings.

Go somewhere else away from them, don't worry, and be happy.

In the meantime, install #Element or #Schildechat at F-Droid and be done with any and all of those text and video chat systems that the evil silos gave you, like the witch, offering the poison apple.

Matrix does it all and respects your ultimate privacy in the process.

Matrix is used, and indeed its use is ebraced by the governments and military of #France and #Germany - BIG TIME, just one of those governments inked a deal with Matrix in the largest ever financial communications contract of its kind (Yes, EVER!).

It's also used by the U.S. Government - because they need to have that which they seek to deny you.... Complete and total privacy in private, #encrypted #communications.

Here are the stated beliefs which form the principles upon which #Matrix is founded. ***I too, believe in these things***:

We believe:

* People should have full control over their own communication.
* People should not be locked into centralized communication silos, but instead be free to pick who they choose to host their communication without limiting who they can reach.
* The ability to converse securely and privately is a basic human right.
* Communication should be available to everyone as a free and open, unencumbered, standard and global network.

So, when you #believe in perverse, subversive ideals such as those, well.... Of course they're going to #cancel_culture you and do their best to #deplatform you Just like all of the others recently, and this my friends, this is how a paradigmatic shift in culture is spawned.

If you're looking for functionality, then #Friendica comes the closest to the base functionality that #MySpace and Faceplant capitalized upon.

I think that perhaps @hamishcampbell days it best with respect to the #addiction factor - #Dopamine is a powerful thing - just look at the having industry and the... Well, just consider that.

#Diaspora is not an #ActivityPub based system as of this juncture in time, and regarding the differences between how a post looks between say, Friendica and #Pleroma, or even Pleroma and other #Mastodon-esque platforms like #Misskey, etc., There are differences between all of them related to the features that one supports, and another doesn't.

This is a positive, market based incentivization for innovation.

Things will continue to evolve as long as there is interest in a platform and new ones come along all the time - there's no reason, for example, why #Planetary can't support its native #SSB while at the same time offering optional #Matrix protocol and ActivityPub integration, affording its users with a measure of interoperability within those spaces.

Looking back over just the last six months is quite encouraging when you consider the interplatform interactivity that users can take advantage of between projects like #PeerTube, #Pixelfed, #Funkwhale, #Lemmy, and the so-called microblogging platforms in the #Fediverse like Misskey, Mastodon, and Pleroma; while Friendica often serves as a bridge to those using Diaspora protocol and even the largely defacto deprecated #OStatus.

I think the time to begin migrating from the monolithic silos is **yesterday**, and continuing into **tomorrow**.

If all that someone wants is to communicate with their highschool buddies and neighbors, perhaps the best choice is indeed #Faceplant?

The Fediverse implies many different emerging and continuously maturing platforms that speak an assortment of federating protocols - not just ActivityPub, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and with development being community informed and inspired.

Anything that resists that last very important point (community driven), simply gets forked, and that to happens all the time - success is based on merit.

What were really taking about here isn't which platforms are ready at this moment for the non-apathetic, concerned userbase to begin their egress from the monolithic silos, but rather, how we can facilitate the ingress of onboarders in becoming comfortable using rapidly evolving platforms that obviate #Faceplant, and #Reddit, and #YouTube, and #Twatter, and #InstaSPAM, and #Whassup, and #Pinterest, and... ad nauseum.

I hope that helps! :)

Matrix protocol is enjoying a huge groundswell in its adoption. This is however, somewhat independent of the fueled kneejerk reactions of people - not so much by virtue of their realizations of having been commoditized, but rather, an opportunity for them to simply venture onto better, greener pastures.

#Matrix is not without barriers to onboarding, but neither is #OpenPGP where email is concerned - one either takes a few minutes to understand the basics of how a newer platform functions from the user perspective or they remain commoditized - many folks find that kind of apathetical complacency no longer acceptable.

I thought I'd share a bit of balanced observation here, and although it is not without its subjectivity, it is pretty spot on:

https://slashdev.space/posts/2021-01-18-reasons-the-fediverse-is-better

FOSS doesn't care if you adopt or use it. There aren't necessarily any budgets or a Board of Directors to answer to, and it can exist lying intact dormant, until someone else comes along to pick up the torch. If it is useful, someone will use it. If it threatens to #disrupt some aspect of the #proprietary, #closed_source world, it still doesn't care.

FOSS projects can be freely hosted or as part of a sponsored endeavor of big venture capitalists - it still doesn't care and that's why it is such the great disruptor and bringer of #democratization of computing and communication to the once insignificant and downtrodden #fodder of the #monolithic_silos, users (participants) who willingly traded their #dignity for a friendly face, like the yummy children boiling in the witches cauldron inside the gingerbread house.

It is common knowledge that these #monopolies are now understood as having their existence facing that of #extinction.

You can't legislate #FOSS, anyone can do with it what they wish to, whether it is legal under your country's regime or not. You can throw people in jail, but guess what, FOSS is still #free, it still exists, and it still doesn't care.

I hope that helps! :)
