@TheFuzzStone Putting aside the proprietary software issue, the least these companies could have done before they got so big is to require a small, honest fee for membership, but they clearly prefer the substantially larger profits had from surveillance capitalism.

They have no #RSS feeds and the #blog page goes to #Medium, which uses #Google Analytics and generally has a privacy policy which leaves a lot to be desired - especially by those who want "a #decentralized and fair internet where users control their own data, identity and destiny."

@freddy Does look promising. Not a lot of info on it though (i.e. whether it's FOSS, has privacy policy etc.)

@freddy I'm still on the fence regarding Signal. I'd love to just move my friends and family to Session, but it was hard enough getting them on Signal. They need to at least give users the option to disable PINs for backups.

@Wetrix
Not even custom ROMs (sans Google)?
@FrankIsFrank
I moved my partner from Windows 10 to Ubuntu as it was the only available option at the time (for various reasons). The trouble is my partner doesn't care enough to let me change the distro again. Ubuntu "just works".

No I felt they were a bit over my budget.

@dsvdv Thanks for sharing. To the best of my (limited) knowledge, the safebrowsing and fonts Google subdomains are pretty standard (I believe the former is used by most browsers for checking security of sites etc., though I could be wrong). As for the Google Firebase Analytics, of course this is concerning (anything Google "analytics" for that matter!). I expect I'll do some research around this. It may be because Preview is still in dev/testing stages.
@jameshjacksonjr @eliasr @purism I really want a Pinephone! Just have to wait till they're more readily available to the masses...
@techit Thanks for letting me know, I'll look into this.
@Korsier Of course, the first thing I think everyone should do is leave Google and Facebook behind for good, and ideally help others find better alternatives for social media (i.e. Mastodon etc.), cloud backups etc. If you want an alt to Google Drive, I'd highly recommend @nextcloud
@eliasr Do you kill everything, or just Wi-Fi and Bluetooth?
@Korsier I think living in the modern world shouldn't require a trade-off of privacy etc. in order to share information in ways you can control (to the extent possible). I think one of the biggest problems today is people's conditioned belief that you simply have to relinquish control and rights in order to get the best out of technology.
@freakazoid Thanks, haven't heard of some of these tools. Could you provide some links for further research?
For context, as much as I love the idea of being completely untrackable (e.g. airplane mode or faraday), I don't go to this extreme, partly due to my partner's protests at not being able to contact me in case of an emergency, which is of course a valid reason.
I wanted to do this poll because I'm still on the fence and I'm always looking for inspiration and new ideas/perspectives.
So don't hesitate to go on a 3-toot rant about your chosen techniques - I'm all ears (eyes). 👍
