@signalapp@mastodon.social I'm getting this error when I try to open 'signal-desktop' (for Debian). Not sure why it's suddenly decided to stop working after most recent update... "The SUID sandbox helper binary was found, but is not configured correctly. Rather than run without sandboxing I'm aborting now. You need to make sure that /opt/Signal/chrome-sandbox is owned by root and has mode 4755. Trace/breakpoint trap"

Why do I get the feeling the gov's rushed release of a contact tracing app is just a cover for how they really intend to handle the situation: continue to monitor everyone's phone location data in real time. It amazes me they expect those of us who haven't been asleep for the last 10 years to believe they truly care about our .

TIL has an feature. So which feed do you think I'm going to add to my feed reader. The hero of course: nitter.net/Snowden/rss

One of my favourite groups - real fighters for the cause - has redesigned their , and it looks great: bigbrotherwatch.org.uk/

As much as I feel I should donate to , I see something like the following, and it's just too much for me:

"we place a pixel on our web pages that allows Facebook to place cookies on web browsers. When a Guardian reader who uses Facebook returns to Facebook, Facebook can identify them".

Any recommendations for quality sites that don't go to such lengths?

And on to the next unit I go for my course . This unit will be covering the 'defenders of digital rights' πŸ” ✊ , such as @privacyint @eff @torproject. :gnu:

Who wants to feature in the 'Why Privacy Matters' unit I'm working on for my course ? Just reply to this toot with your 'privacy pitch' - how you would explain to someone that matters. Any responses used will be anonymised and I will let you know if you're featured. Thanks!

I keep going to contribute to the documentation of projects I care about on @gitlab, e.g. @nextcloud, and noticing a account is required. Why is there still so much reliance on GitHub for repos on GitLab? Can anyone recommend projects to contribute to on ? I was pleased to notice @lineageos is on there...

I've reached a milestone with my course, . The course theme is complete and I'm giving it back to the community under a GPLv3 licence: gitlab.com/5am/adapt-freelearn

Is it just me or is for taking a long time? There seem to be no real updates about progress. Would appreciate more info if anyone has it.

This pandemic means a lot of people are now having to choose appropriate communication tools, but it's a minefield out there. Understandably the right choice is unclear for many without the patience or experience. This is why we the community, knowing everyone needs privacy and security, must help family and friends utilise those tools we all know and love, software which puts people before profit. and education is essential in these strange times.

"Simply put, tech companies need to do better" - Simply put, these politicians just don't get it, do they. You cannot expect any self-respecting tech company to weaken security on demand. Is this our generation's cryptowar?
