As much as I feel I should donate to #TheGuardian, I see something like the following, and it's just too much for me:
"we place a pixel on our web pages that allows Facebook to place cookies on web browsers. When a Guardian reader who uses Facebook returns to Facebook, Facebook can identify them".
Any recommendations for quality #news sites that don't go to such lengths?
@FreePietje
Yes, the Guardian is at least very transparent. Unfortunately #TheIntercept tries to load #GoogleAnalytics, according to my #uBlockOrigin add-on. I'd expect better from them... It's not like there aren't more privacy-respecting alternatives available for #analytics.
@syntax
Oh wow, that's indeed quite disappointing :-/
@syntax
They're also shameless #5G fanatics, and weave pro-5G narratives. They even have a series called, "A Microchip in Everything" , we kid you not!
To be fair they started going downhill the minute they turned their back on #JulianAssange.
Perhaps donate to a journalist that accepts #bitcoin. ;)
@dsfgs
I wish I could donate to a quality news site with crypto! I'm just looking for the right site I feel justified in donating to and continuing to use on a daily basis as a go-to. I considered Wiki News but it's just not good enough.
@syntax
If ur in Australia, we've found #Crikey to be a decent voice. They published one progressives work we knew personally, who was struggling to get the investigative research out on other Australian rags, including so-called progressive ones like TheGuardian and others.
#Independant.co.uk were one of the few outlets to report #Spain's new #UBI. We shared this story.
If all else fails, #CommonDreams, #telesur (english) or #RT?
We don't know if any of these use #bitcoin.
@dsfgs Thanks for the info
@syntax
Np. Yesterday we tooted a piece at Crikey, that called for Assange to be in a safer location, and reasons why leaders in Australia need to get more vocal.
The fight for simple freedom for a publisher, journalist and an outlet for whistleblowers shouldn't be this hard. :(
@syntax This is why I like using RSS feed readers :)
@ferds
Same! But it annoys me when posts are chopped way too short. Almost defeats the purpose. Any feeds you'd recommend for news?
@syntax What news do you like to read?
@syntax @ferds
AFAIK, RSS is meant to show a (short) summary which allows you to determine whether you want to read the full article (in your browser).
RSS client applications could retrieve/show more, but that's (strictly) outside of RSS' role/function.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS
@FreePietje @ferds That's fair enough. It's just nice to be able to read full articles from the reader (some feeds appear to allow this).
@syntax @ferds
I can understand that. And I'm convinced that some RSS clients do or can fetch and show it all.
In Akregator, you can open the full contents in a new tab within the program.
Some feeds indeed contain the whole content.
I use AntennaPod to listen to podcasts and I'm very glad it does way more then just shows the RSS feeds of those podcasts.
IOW, depending on your needs, it may be useful to try out different RSS clients.
@FreePietje @ferds Also a fan of AntennaPod!
@syntax @FreePietje I use Newsboat+elinks :)
@FreePietje @syntax I think the rss article one sees is curated by the website. Some sites use rss as a short summary (to force you to their website for fingerprinting), other sites give the full article.
If you open an rss article insignia your reader, you are essentially opening up the web page inside your rss reader
@FreePietje @syntax Haha. I am not a cynical person, but surveillance capitalism is everywhere and gets to me
@syntax theintercept.com is great.
I might write an email to the Guardian, maybe even start a petition. I think people would be willing to support the movement.
Also, I wouldn't stop reading the Guardian if they started using privacy respecting ads like codefund.io
@freddyym
Unfortunately The Intercept uses Google Analytics!
@syntax yikes.
@syntax I'm looking for something similar.
I'm trying to find a news agregator that's decentralised.
All I can think of other then "liking fanpages on FB" is Flipboard and Apple News… and both are centralised.
What I simply want is a good old RSS system and/or article scraping.
Is there any new incarnation of the RSS this days?
@vol Definitely. There's a Linux program called 'newsboat' which is a nice, simple CLI feed reader. Just add your feeds to a config file and you're ready to go. For mobile, I use 'Feeder', which is available through F-Droid.
@syntax are big news sites still provide RSS feeds? :O This is a game changer for me!
@vol The only big paper I know of which has feeds is The Guardian. But there are probably more. Here are The Guardian's: https://blog.feedspot.com/theguardian_rss_feeds/ #rss #newspaper #news
@syntax https://legiblenews.com is worth a look (pulls from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Current_events) but is JavaScript free.
Wish more sites would offer “lite” versions like https://text.npr.org and https://lite.cnn.com.
@syntax There's also the JavaScript-free https://m.zaqs.org, "a customizable news aggregator of online news websites. Our mission is to provide a fast loading website that can show what is going on in the world right now, with multiple perspectives and sources, without editorialization, and to be a good portal for the discovery of new and interesting news websites."
@syntax Down a rabbit hole, I also found the open-source http://guardian.gyford.com, "For viewing a daily issue of the Guardian and Observer newspapers using content from the Guardian Open Platform."
@andreas That's a nice idea! It works well using just arrow keys for quick nav. I also like the ZAQS site, especially the way you can customise your feeds.
@andreas Thanks, I'll check out legiblenews.com.
@syntax
#TheIntercept doesn't use those technologies, but I'm pretty sure there are very few which respect privacy. At least the Guardian is up front about it.
I can recommend uMatrix Firefox add-on to prevent that unwanted tracing.
