If you think 10 seconds is slow to compile an entire app, you should have been around 20 to 25 years ago.
We regularly used to go on a coffee-break or for a walk while the program was compiling 🙈
Back on the 386, I used to kick off a build of the latest Linux kernel before I would go to bed. In the morning I could often watch it finish after I just got up.
Building later versions of Netscape or early Firefox releases? You could go on a little weekend-trip before it would finish 😂

Purely for nostalgia's sake, would it be possible to run something like the original Netscape in a VM? I've been reading a book about the history of the internet and find it really interesting learning about the origins of Firefox etc, which I respect so highly now. However, not properly using a PC until 2000s, I missed those early years.

Mostly. Sometimes you run into weird assumptions (like the date being too "new"), but you can usually work around that by back-dating your VM.
