Bought the 2018 Kindle used for $30. The DRM=Bad and all that but loading mobi and epubs work without talking to Amazon. I can keep it in Airplane mode indefinitely if I want.

Yeah, Calibre is great, sure you have checked it out. You can legally buy books from Amazon or others, download EPUB version and put it in (apart from piracy).
