In case anyone was wondering, Weinberg is a pushover with no constitution. I once asked him why doesn't filter out privacy-abusing sites & it triggered him. He had no sound defense.. no good answer for it. It's clear that he simply does not have the guts to truly deliver a privacy-respecting search engine. He's fixated on serving normies who are privacy-naive.

@protonmail @ProtonCalendar @protonvpn @FediFollows I suggest avoiding until they fix their problem. Protonmail is forcing people to solve an . And worse, it's occasional, so users may only encounter the CAPTCHA after they've distributed their @protonmail address to others, at which point users are trapped.

#Debian #Bullseye breaks some #Electron-based apps like #Electronmail (iow #Protonmail). #Signal has a workaround (github.com/signalapp/Signal-De). Not sure if #Wire is affected. This is because the appindicator pkg was dropped & forked to libayatana-appindicator.

I tried to access a no longer existing website, and just got a blank screen. I had to enable tons of cascading javascript in a series of uMatrix sessions just to reach a non-blank page somewhat suggesting that the site is non-existent. Web developers unable to control their urge to do complex shit managed to botch something as simple as sending a 404 error. Thanks "parkingcrew"!

If you have an old #TomTom, don't throw it away. It's possible to put #OpenTom & #OSM maps on it, or an app like #TripMaster which shows lat/long, speed, & all the sensor data. Caveat: TripMaster is apparently gratis non-free sw. wiki.navit-project.org/index.p github.com/george-hopkins/open webazar.org/tomtom/tripmaster.

Just published Google lawsuit evidence indicates that like always retained users' location data, even if disabled in user interface, to the extent that its own employees flashed LineageOS on their phones to avoid tracking. Full thread on twitter.com/jason_kint/status/

A lawyer for a corp I am suing sent me a letter asking me to email them, & they gave no phone number. The MX server for their address is MS , which uses to block legit msgs coming from dynamic IPs. I must admit it's gratifying to tell them their defense was hindered because they chose to depend on MS for email service.

confession: i deliberately leave channels after every conversation b/c sitting in the channel adds to Libera.chat's perception of popularity. But I sit in channels to maintain the balance. It's a way of voting. Ppl who fled to Libera said Fn would be bad for privacy, yet Fn is apparently cloaking everyone automatically whereas Libera cloaks can only be had outside Tor

@Hyolobrika
Indeed. So #BruceSchneier quite rightly dismisses #MobileCoin as "just plain stupid" (schneier.com/blog/archives/202).

Now the #EFF (who has Schneier on the board), has partnered with #Signal's #MobileCoin. WTF?!

It's just another case showing EFF to be sellouts willing to promote whoever throws money their way.

@eff

To those trying to select a linux distro: one of the most important factors in which distro to choose is *support*. .com sadly neglects this. So ppl will choose a distro like b/c the description might be just what they're after, but .de shows not a single IRC channel for it. Choose , then later discover the docs are jailed in .

what my girlfriend thought dating a software engineer would be like: "honey, I got an AI robot maid to do all our cooking for us"

what dating a software engineer is actually like: "if that microwave connects to the internet we're heating all our food with a blowtorch from now on"

Today, the European Parliament approved the ePrivacy Derogation, allowing providers of e-mail and messaging services to automatically search all personal messages of each citizen for presumed suspect content and report suspected cases to the police.

I heard that ISPs in India and Serbia often offer connections as a budget Internet service. What other countries and circumstances is CGNAT used?

A Belgian developed an app that uses AI to find mobile phones in a video stream and ID the face close to it. If the person matches a known Flemish politician, pics of them being distracted during meetings are posted publicly: driesdepoorter.be/theflemishsc

@TheOuterLinux @dallin @lord I'm not sure what their rationale is, but it really doesn't matter. I generally object with the stance "they had a problem to solve so give them some sympathy". It's a common defense for svcs like #DuckDuckGo.. how can they make money if they don't leverage cheap services from Microsoft? Well that's their problem not mine. As users, we need not accept that. We can vote with our feet
