Language/Mental Hack #423

Zealot speculators of crypto-currencies like to call their assets/obsessions "crypto".

It is misleading, as "#crypto" usually means "#cryptography", a useful science! It therefore brings confusion, associating cryptography with the speculative gambling of a few privileged people.

I decided that to balance that, i would only refer to "crypto-currencies" as "currencies", in order to emphasize their monetary/financial nature.

Words matter.

, every time I've been directed to a tweet in the past couple months over Tor: "Instance has been rate limited. Use another instance or try again later."

It's as if someone who can't afford a high-end home theater system & 4+ streaming subscriptions in the US + whatever other luxeries are in the $50-75k range, they're suffering.

Show thread

Americans with incomes below $75k are getting the full stimulus ($1400). That's per person. What they consider a struggle range is a quite high bar, no? I wouldn't need a stimulus payment if I made half that much. I don't mean to critisize the stimulus or sound republican, just reflecting how high living standards are.

@eff @HP proposed new rule: the US Bureau of Weights & Measures must require an estimated price per oz or mL on all printer ink packaging, and audit them for accuracy. Regulate it like fuel.

If registrations are killed by robots, then people are pressured to do what they should have done in the 1st place: walk away from CAPTCHAs & stop engaging CAPTCHA-blockaded services.

I hear gives a way to register to avoid solving work. Obviously that attacks , as all each user's activity can be aggregated together. So why not have a cookie exchange program where registered accounts circulate in a pool until they're cut off? Robots could use those cookies too, which is a good thing. If it forces them to stop registrations, even better.

I thought there were only 1 or 2 markdown standards and ton of non-compliant wild implementations. Now I'm realizing that there are at least 5 different standards. I think that actually disturbs me even more. Before making a new standard, why not 1st check if an existing standard is close enough?

Show thread

Does the world really need 5+ different markdown standards?

@fsf

The .org mail server has become so restricted that I can no longer post to *@gnu.org mailing lists or reach RMS.

RMS had the fedi acct @rms@gnusocial.no in 2019, but apparently no longer. (strangely the website says no such user, but the 2019 timeline is still reachable via the API)

Would someone plz tell me if he has a gnu social account somewhere else?

/cc @jack

After being spoiled on the rich of (github-like markdown), I find that markdown on , / , / all have unacceptible limitations. Where can I write a blog, besides using gitea?

@eff we need laws to limit deployment. Many European govs are smart enough to prohibit installing a surveillance camera that captures someone elses home. In the US, the house across the street can surveil your home 24/7, and in fact it's illegal for you to put up a fence that's high enough to block it.

Dear browser developers: plz implement a timer that imposes a 10 sec. limit on #javascript (per tab). After 10 sec, put the js process to sleep if it's still running. Give users a "10 more seconds" button if they need it to continue running more.

If someone pays by credit card for an online order, do vendors normally disclose the customer's email address to the bank (who might then share it with the credit bureaus)? I think my credit report only shows email addresses that I've directly given to banks.
