I actually cannot buy something because the /only/ sites that sell it are Cloudflare sites or , both of which I boycott. I will therefore go without.

Dear developers: plz make the “site:” parameter capable of wildcards so I don't have to add this to every search => “-site:amazon.com -site:amazon.de -site:amazon.ca -site:amazon.fr -site:amazon.sa -site:amazon.co.uk”.. and then do the same for ebay. ATM it's like a game of whack-a-mole.

@Bmz @txusinho @jb @Mojeek @werwolf maybe scratch off.. I've used them in the past, but I just got a 403 error when searching over tor. So perhaps mojeek is becoming Tor-hostile.

@resist1984 neither coincidental or laziness: it's #AffiliateMarketing.

Every click stores a cookie in your browser and if you complete any purchase on Amazon within 24h after clicking that link, they gain a 10-15% commission on the sale.

That's why almost all "reviews" of such products say amazing things about it. They could care less about the product, they only want you to goddamn buy it already.

Sadly, it's not just Amazon. Lots of platforms do these affiliates nowadays...

@DavidB Such a search engine would naturally root out the /professional/ reviewers, and let the more meaningful reviews (from consumers) rise to the top.

@DavidB I would be useful if there were a search engine for product/service reviews that would down-rank results with those kind of links.

@kzimmermann Well Amazon is pretty much enemy number one to ethical consumers and Amazon's competition is struggling. So I'm more bothered by everyone being sent to Amazon than about competitors doing the same tracking. It's a good point though.. I noticed reviews tend not to mention the negatives & I figured it was just a lazy/incompetent reviewer. But the kickback makes it all more clear.

Product review articles almost always give a link to where to buy the thing, and that link always points to , which I find disturbing. Are they getting a kickback from Amazon, or are they just being lazy? I'm guessing the latter.

It is exciting to see #Amazon's #Drone delivery program collapsing, I hope this is the end of this idea. It would really have a horrible impact on so many aspects of daily life. wired.co.uk/article/amazon-dro

@nytpu @epoch might be worth a look. It's quite small, has a live distro, and has GPG. But since it's also installable, I'm not sure if the GPG is on the live version or if it's only installable.

@epoch @nytpu It's a long list, but if you recognize any that are purely live distros that would cover your needs. I noticed Tails and Knoppix are both listed.. although possibly not as small as you're after.

@nytpu @epoch I suspect linux would have GPG pre-installed so you could do that. Tails is a live distro that runs off a USB stick. Also, you can get a list of distros that include GPG here: distrowatch.com/search.php?pkg

@nytpu The perverse thing about the way .social blocks an account is they print a false msg to the user saying “this account has been suspended”, when in fact the account is quite functional (it's only been “suspended” on another node not by mamot.fr).

@nytpu Mastodon.social apparently cherry-picks just 1 account they want to block. E.g. they block altlink@mamot.fr (instead of all of mamot.fr, I think). So it's a shame there are sloppy power abusers who block a whole node over one individual. BTW, if you are not on mastodon.social, I suggest following altlink@mamot.fr. It's a beneficial bot that DMs you when you post a link.

Why does the #creditCard company receive details about the flights you book? They don't seem to receive transaction details for any other kind of transaction. The credit card statement doesn't show me what specifically I bought in a shop or restaurant. Why is there difference in the info sharing when buying air travel?

@rysiek before wifi it'd just be a matter of unplugging ethernet. You could still deny the device wifi access, but now that is building their own network it's even more dicey. Short of tampering, voiding warranties, you'd probably need a signal jammer that targets open APs. 🤔

The right to be online should be coupled with a right to be offline.

There has been a fight for the right to be online (in part to push for Internet in rural America & for the poor). Superficially that's fair, but the problem is govs already operate with the assumption that people are online. So people are being forced to use & trust svcs from dubious gov-admin'd sites (e.g. ). How can I opt out? Now we need a right to be *offline*.
