@gemlog @mplammers @democracynow I've read that some black printers have stego. E.g. you reserve a few pixels on the edge of a letter or make "solid" black areas less than solid when magnified. These things likely escape notice. IIRC, someone was convinced that stego is happening but they couldn't decode it so it remains unproven.

@gemlog @democracynow @mplammers There's also some degree of inherent protection with an unknown printer. The attacker/prosecutor has to think "do we really want to play this card in court and increase public knowlege?" Whereas if it's an HP printer, no adversary has cause to hold back.

@mplammers @democracynow @gemlog If someone gets stung by a known culprit, it's a total loss; but getting stung by an unknown at least advances public awareness.

@gemlog @democracynow @mplammers i've not heard of any lab finding tracker dots on Samsung or Oki printers. EFF saw the trend spreading and just gave up and said "they're all doing it", yet there is no law requiring it. It's better to buy a printer make not known to be printing S/Ns than to get one known to be. BTW, mono printers are much less likely to have tracker dots.

@mplammers @democracynow I also like to point out how she got caught: RLW used a color printer to print the docs she leaked, and the model of printer in her office printed yellow . Then scanned the docs, and the tracker dots appeared on the digital copy that wikileaks published, which trivially traced to RLW's office. Consumers should be boycotting relevant printer makers.

@civodul @boud indeed that's what makes it good for journals, but OTOH it's not ideal that markdown doesn't render.

@datenschutzratgeber Ss already demonstrates that it's possible. Why wouldn't it be? If a source decides to give 100% Cloudflare results, they can simply be dropped as a source.

@datenschutzratgeber The rankings of the majors can be discarded since we don't use the majors directly. A metasearch engine (or user app) controls its own ranking. Some searx instances will alternate round-robin: #1 from google, #1 from bing (if different), #1 from giga, #2 from google, etc. No reason bad sites can't be filtered.

has been down most of the day now. For Tor users who refuse to connect to sites that means ~34% of the web is unreachable.

@otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez I can't explain it then. Some people are still trapped on onion v2 (like one of my machines), but then if that were the case you wouldn't even get the warning screen. You might try booting a recent Tails live disk and see if it works. Any other users having problems reaching sercxi.nnpaefp7pkadbxxkhz2agtbv2a4g5sgo2fbmv3i7czaua354334uqqad.onion ?

@otso @otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez do other onion sites work for you? When I click "Accept the Risk and Continue", it takes me to the search form.

@gomez @davidoclubb @anniemo71 @otso that warning is overly alarming and i've heard chatter that Tor Browser devs might remove the warning in future versions.

@otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez that's because the cert is self-signed. You can ignore that because onion sites inherently give you e2ee even if there is no SSL.

@otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez i never use the clearnet site (it's clearnet only), but the onion link is reliable and working for me right now. You need to install Tor Browser to use that onion link.

His simple answer is "Fuck you!"

@otso @cryptoxic At the very least, the free world is well outside of the jailed walled-garden of ("CF").

@datenschutzratgeber Ss is handling the current scale just fine but it has a breaking point, which is why other search engines calling themselves "privacy focused" need to actually become privacy focused.
