@zack Forwarding requires logging into Yandex which now blocks Tor, in order to set it up. I could do that over a VPN, but other complexities come into play. I'd rather trust a free-world provider with yandex creds than trust yandex with an address & then also trust that a forwarding provider doesn't spam-block all the forwarded msgs /cc @mansr
@gemlog @claudiom I've stopped supporting #LinuxMint because they have started jailing their docs in a restrictive #CloudFlare site (#ReadTheDocs). I'm glad to see the Haiku docs are accessible.
@imgn there are also cases where the sense of smell isn't lost, but rather modified so for example an orange smells like rotting flesh or feces. My search is coming up dry on that though, so maybe these are rare enough symptoms to be negligable.
@imgn once vaccinated I can still carry & transmit the virus, so i'll keep wearing the mask. But I thought there might be some low-risk situations where I'd forgo the mask, knowing that i'm willing to put up with some symptoms if it gets transmitted to me. OTOH taste/smell modification is a big quality of life hit if it lasts years, in which case i'd be more diligent to wear a mask.
@Santral the 100% efficacy rate is only w.r.t preventing death. Consider J&J, which is "66% effective at preventing moderate to severe COVID-19". I'm not sure where loss of taste/smell is in their scale, but the high 80%+ efficacy figures are for hospitalization prevention.
Since the vaccine only protects from severe disease, hospitalization, and death, I'm a bit concerned about the #covid19 symptom of loss/distortion of sense of taste & smell, which some people lost over 1 year ago and still haven't recovered. Is that still a high risk even to vaccinated people?
@krock one thing that goes a long way is to make no concessions yourself. I don't have any #GAFAM accts (exceptionally amazon acct is stale), so anyone who wants to reach me must do so outside of #Facebook, Google, etc. I tell normies they can only reach me on protonmail if they have a PM acct also, or Wire. I'm the one person in the group that ruins the convenience of everyone using FB.
@krock When privacy & tech freedom fail as selling points, I try to appeal to other aspects. E.g. if the audience is progressive, then tell them that Trump was in power because of Facebook (catalyzed by #CambridgeAnalytica). I'm sorry to say that the tactic isn't working. They still won't give up #Facebook even knowing it empowered the most notorious scumbag in modern times.
@krock It's a case of intentional self-inflicted ignorance to avoid the inconvenience of ethical duty & activism.
@krock Hard to get normies to understand the full extent of the problem when they realise right away that "this conversation is going in the direction of pushing me away from something that's fun or convenient". Just like meat eaters w/a shred of empathy don't want to hear about what animals go through.. the knowledge comes w/responsibility they don't want, so they refuse the knowledge.
Championing privacy and tech freedom with friends and family has often been a thankless or worse experience for me. Being the bearer of bad news and inconvenient facts puts misplaced ire on me. Ignorance is bliss. I feel a responsibility to my friends and family and do not want to be alone in understanding. At the same time, I do not want to be hated. I really try to restrain and tone down the topic, but the ideas consume me. I guess many people here have a similar experience?
The folks giving support in the #ImageMagick forum *refuse* to help anyone they suspect is trying to use ImageMagick to solve CAPTCHAs. They think they're on the side of humanity by fighting bots, but it's actually the other way around. The sooner bots defeat #CAPTCHA, the sooner the burden on humans forced to solve them will end.
