The #FSF's refusal to demote #Gitlab.com from a "C" rating to an "F" rating is an embarrassment. https://sopuli.xyz/post/1865
i mean, what else can we do? You can't #boycott a government, so you have to boycott a region. And in doing so, less revenue in the region means less tax revenue in the region.
#Arkansas lawmakers pass a bill for near-total #abortion ban, incl rape cases. Activists: #Walmart hires over 2 million people in AK, & #TysonFoods hires ~130,000, Dillard's 40,000 people in AK. #Boycott Walmart, Tyson Foods, and Dillard's. https://apnews.com/article/us-news-arkansas-bills-legislation-389aca43e65033959d30eb8082d281d1
@apnews_bot I would have boosted this if it hadn't contained a #Twitter link. But I will not be a twitter enabler.
Language/Mental Hack #423
Zealot speculators of crypto-currencies like to call their assets/obsessions "crypto".
It is misleading, as "#crypto" usually means "#cryptography", a useful science! It therefore brings confusion, associating cryptography with the speculative gambling of a few privileged people.
I decided that to balance that, i would only refer to "crypto-currencies" as "currencies", in order to emphasize their monetary/financial nature.
Words matter.
@jz Bingo. Needs to be said. When a millennial asked me to tell him what I know about "crypto", I started into symetric & asymetric differences. He had this confused look on his face. So I slowed down, to try to work out what he wasn't picking up on, and he eventually stopped me to say he meant "#cryptocurrency". I was a bit frustrated that the discipline had been hijacked.
@djsundog @msh @alcinnz note this is the actual article link which avoids TWTR: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-09/hackers-expose-tesla-jails-in-breach-of-150-000-security-cams
@alcinnz @msh @djsundog The embarrassment to #CloudFlare will probably never manifest to the extent that it should. They will just point the finger & people will overlook their incompetence in auditing their own security. This is why corporations love to outsource. Not that it improves security, but it gives them an unjust ability to duck blame.
@mupan but indeed, setting a different instance worked
@mupan i appreciate the tip.. i overlooked the other instances. Ideally, #PrivacyRedirect should try other instances when one fails
@MrNarrow @strypey I've been happy #PrivacyRedirect user for a while now. I would like to see improvements though. When #Nitter refuses service saying "Instance has been rate limited. Use another instance or try again later," waiting until later is a non-starter. Would be useful if PR would then revert to archive.org as a secondary choice.
#Nitter, every time I've been directed to a tweet in the past couple months over Tor: "Instance has been rate limited. Use another instance or try again later."
@FreePietje @ggus The 2nd problem is that people know their own threat models better than you do, and they know better than you if their adversary is going to have the capability of cracking RSA1024. Users should be in control of their own security, not have a vendor impose on them.
@ggus @FreePietje I think everyone agrees that v3 is more secure. The problem is two-fold. It's a reckless schedule. Demanding everyone migrate in 15 months grossly miscalculates many different situations. Not everyone is a gamer who can simply hit an upgrade button without side-effects.. without important tools failing. 15 months would be reasonable *iff* the network were not impacted.
@themactep@fosstodon.org @mindofjoe @MindOfJoe Condsider how SSH keys work; pubkey crypto. It's the answer. A couple years ago I heard a web standard was emerging to use either SSH keys or the like. Not sure where it's at now.
It's as if someone who can't afford a high-end home theater system & 4+ streaming subscriptions in the US + whatever other luxeries are in the $50-75k range, they're suffering.
Americans with incomes below $75k are getting the full stimulus ($1400). That's per person. What they consider a struggle range is a quite high bar, no? I wouldn't need a stimulus payment if I made half that much. I don't mean to critisize the stimulus or sound republican, just reflecting how high living standards are.
