@rune@mastodon.nzoss.nz I've not owned a printer for 10 years, grateful to have access to other printers and nearby print shops so I can avoid directly patronizing unethical makers. If I had to buy one, it'd probably be NEC, Oki, or Samsung.

@joachim @douginamug It's interesting that the dots were readable on The Intercept's *published version* of the documents, which seems to imply they did a really high quality color scan, no? Who does that? Why wouldn't a newspaper be smart enough to scan (presumably text) docs as a bitonal image where a yellow dot would be assigned white and not black?

@krugar @joachim @douginamug @jums there's a lot of fuzziness there. For some printers there is a concrete "yes" to the question, and for others it's up in the air. Obviously ppl should avoid buying a printer that's confirmed compromised. Oki is a good bet. It's non-US, & Oki doesn't have scandals and dirt that most makers have.

financial

@cryptoxic when interest is low, it's better to put the money into a stock that pays dividends. Often the dividend payout is higher than interest.

financial

@cryptoxic in some countries there is a tax on the mere act of /calculating/ interest, and that tax can exceed the full amount of the interest.

financial

@cryptoxic I'd rather tell banks just keep the interest, or redirect to charity and don't even tell me.

financial

@cryptoxic tiny amounts of interest is a bad thing. Any interest at all requires reporting.. the bank must report your account to the feds, and you must then declare it on your taxes. It also means they must send you a bank statement every month even if zero other txns. The cost of postage and then your effort to deal w/it.. not worth it.

@d599f84e @amolith@masto.nixnet.xyz That's an impressive list, particularly with all the *.onion sites. Would be useful if @watch would include invidio.us instances.

Americans: It's not enough to freeze your credit. If you only ask for a freeze your data will still be shared for prescreening offers. You also want to specifically opt-out of . If you opt-out of prescreening, Innovis will automatically send your opt-out preference to , , & .

@vcrkhl@mastodon.social the vagueness is killing me. But I will say that if the device is made by or , for example, knowing that these companies are very unethical members, then by selling them used you help prevent someone buying a new device from those makers.

@cryptoxic it's worth noting that there is a better option than an electric kettle. There are appliances that heat water using inline heating elements on demand, which is how some coffee makers work. This avoids heating a whole container of water. Bosche makes one that is just for heating water, generally for tea.

@cryptoxic So it's likely more efficient overall to gas heat a pot of water.

@cryptoxic if the stovetop is electric, then there should be no doubt that an electric kettle is more efficient. But if the stove is gas, it's complicated. The gas burn is quite inefficient as it heats air around the pot. From the wall to the electric kettle, there is negligible energy loss. But there is a lot of loss in getting the electricity to your wall. Some power plants are gas burning.

food safety

@root or just remove the sprouts when cleaning them, and peel them if they're green under the skin. Store them in darkness. This is a good comprehensive article on it: healthline.com/nutrition/green

@d599f84e I didn't know invidio.us was decentralized. Where would I find an instance with a working download? w.r.t mpv, I assumed that was simply a player. Does that include a feature to save streams to files?

@ajz
I left youtube-dl for , because youtube-dl seemed to need chronic self-updating. CClive worked great for years but it no longer works. Perhaps I should go back to youtube-dl.
