@ITwrx @phryk I've had some websites bring down my whole system lately. Not sure if RAM bloat alone can be blamed but projects like #weboob need to take off & save us from the shitty web.

@pettter @phryk I'll cut the rant short here, and just say that #Mastodon is bloated, though less than #Pleroma. A good client is #bitlbee with the Mastodon plugin, which seems to be quite lean.

@phryk @pettter I also think the web is far overused. We should be able to FTP::get our bank statements, for example. When the web's dominance surged I thought it was just to get service to non-technical users, & that users would get smarter & move to SSH, FTP, IRC, etc, but no the web just got more bloated, so millions of ppl needlessly blow more money on hardware.

@ITwrx @phryk it's a shame the task manager is not in "Tools" menu. It's becoming more important lately, and they've hid it well.

@phryk @ITwrx I click on the "burger" icon (w/the 3 bars), and there is a "more >" which expands to a "task manager". That's in #Tor browser (FF-based) but iirc it's roughly the same for FF and Chromium

@phryk @pettter i will not cave though. Screw those fat webappsites. To buy a machine newer than 10 yrs old is to support peddlers of spy chips (intel M.E., trustzone, etc)

@pettter @phryk i concur, & I'm disgusted that the web has gotten too fat for 4gb. Avoid #Pleroma. This issue brought me to learn that browsers have a task manager (in the menu) which shows the memory footprint per tab.

@curufuin Your thesis is changing here. Of course the racial issues are entirely different. I'm not a Pete supporter in the primaries & I don't have the details on his racial background. My response was to your OP (obligatory military svc).

@curufuin It's totally unrealistic to think that Pete would get Congress on his side on this, because not a single democrat in Congress would support it. He would need an NRA-supported republican majority, and that's just to get started. It's bizarre and far-fetched the scenario that you think would play out.

To know what a modern day progressive mandate of military svc would look like you'd have to look at Europe. e.g. Belgium, where everyone must do "military" svc. But since there are so many problems w/forcing ppl to strap on boots, citizens can opt for community svc instead. In such a hypothetical post-equal rights era it's only feasible for men & women to have that choice. Yet in the US, this violates the 13th amendment. Changing #13A needs more than Congress. Every state votes on it

But if we want to consider such a hypothetical world, only a largely #republican Congress would agree to mandating military svc, & if Pete boots Trump a republican Congress would stand against Pete's every move.

@curufuin @cdmnky No significant number of ppl believe that replacing #Trump with Pete is merely "symbolic". That's absurd. It's your choice to be a single-issue voter, but your opposition to Pete is effectively /symbolic/, b/c Pete wouldn't succeed in mandating military svc. The US has an elite military of highly trained volunteers - there is no need for a draft.

@jalcine @freakazoid I can't/won't read the article b/c it's jailed in #CloudFlare, but it's not fair to say #Gitlab "values diversity" when their website treats #Tor users with such hostility & subjects users to #Google tracking (by way of #CAPTCHA). Contempt for #netneutrality is a form of exclusivity not conducive to diversity.
