Trump did great damage to the USA. The entire world is there with video calls, while the White House is now talking on the telephone. 🀑 At least it is land line quality.

@VictorVenema Scientists are practised at making comments look like questions. So as the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy was there I asked:

"Mr. Sheehan, is the White House #OSTP aware that the main Open Source Code repository #GitHub is forced by the US to block several countries, which makes it useless for scientific use?"

@VictorVenema @VictorVenema A developer just told me they would be willing to expand & enhance a tool, but because the project is in MS , they opted not to. I just want that on record for those who think putting their project on Github encourages support.

When I find bugs, I want to report them as a responsible user. But if the project uses Github, I can't do it.

@redstarfish @resist1984 @VictorVenema@fediscience.org @VictorVenema@bonn.social I have the same problem with #gitlab. It's a pity that a protocol like git that was meant for #decentralization is now subject to platform wars. I guess someone should disrupt the whole thing by building a convenient #federated collaboration and communication infrastructure around git.

@dreiwert @VictorVenema @VictorVenema @redstarfish a project to do that is already underway. I forgot what they were calling it though. Maybe "fedilab"?

@resist1984 @dreiwert @VictorVenema@bonn.social @VictorVenema@fediscience.org @redstarfish close, but no cigar. It's based on Activitypub, and at least Gitea has more than one open issue on it (GitLab too, IIRC). I forgot the name as well; wasn't it something with "forge"? ForgeFed?

@IzzyOnDroid @resist1984 @dreiwert @VictorVenema@bonn.social @VictorVenema@fediscience.org @redstarfish

Yes, you are both correct. #FedeProxy is a new grassroots community and dev project to federate code forges, and will use the #ForgeFed protocol among others to do so.

@dachary I think will find this use case for #science very interesting.

FedeProxy is driving initiative for #Gitea with a grant applicaiton (5k Euro already available). See: forum.fedeproxy.eu/t/grant-app

@dreiwert @redstarfish @resist1984 @VictorVenema@fediscience.org @VictorVenema@bonn.social Gitlab I think can do that. Debian runs their own Gitlab instance called salsa for internal development, so while I'm not privy to all the political and moral issues that might surround GitHub, they seem more open and less creepy than GitHub.

@gerowen @VictorVenema @VictorVenema @redstarfish @dreiwert 's instance (salsa) is a non-starter for me because they impose a upon registration, which in turn imposes on users. Apart from that there are some decent Gitlab forges: git.sdf.org/humanacollaborator
