@mplammers @democracynow I also like to point out how she got caught: RLW used a color printer to print the docs she leaked, and the model of printer in her office printed yellow . Then scanned the docs, and the tracker dots appeared on the digital copy that wikileaks published, which trivially traced to RLW's office. Consumers should be boycotting relevant printer makers.

@resist1984
It's ALL of them and those dots have been there for many years now.

@gemlog @democracynow @mplammers i've not heard of any lab finding tracker dots on Samsung or Oki printers. EFF saw the trend spreading and just gave up and said "they're all doing it", yet there is no law requiring it. It's better to buy a printer make not known to be printing S/Ns than to get one known to be. BTW, mono printers are much less likely to have tracker dots.

@gemlog @mplammers @democracynow I've read that some black printers have stego. E.g. you reserve a few pixels on the edge of a letter or make "solid" black areas less than solid when magnified. These things likely escape notice. IIRC, someone was convinced that stego is happening but they couldn't decode it so it remains unproven.

@resist1984
Scan, make b/w, blur, then unsharp? Dunno what that would look like, but some procedure must have developed by now at wikileaks.

@gemlog @democracynow @mplammers i'm sure wikileaks won't repeat their very sloppy mishap. If I were wikileaks I would OCR and regenerate from scratch assuming a huge font selection, and perhaps a way to add noise to graphical elements - but drop graphics entirely if nonessential.

@resist1984
But that would lose the proof of authenticity of the real one...
@democracynow @mplammers

@gemlog @mplammers @democracynow yeah, it's a question that would have to be on a case by case basis. Sometimes the info alone is damning enough and evidence can come from something else.

@resist1984
As you say, I'm sure they've learned their, very expensive, lesson.
@mplammers @democracynow

@mplammers @democracynow @gemlog in the case of Reality Winner, it would have been enough to bilevel the doc.
