For everyone who’s had enough of online tracking, DuckDuckGo lets you take back your online privacy now.

@anniemo71 my default search engine #ddg
@anniemo71 @davidoclubb Actually #DDG is a poor choice for #privacy. http://techrights.org/2021/03/15/duckduckgo-in-2021/

So a better alternative would be?
@otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez i never use the clearnet site (it's clearnet only), but the onion link is reliable and working for me right now. You need to install Tor Browser to use that onion link.
@otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez that's because the cert is self-signed. You can ignore that because onion sites inherently give you e2ee even if there is no SSL.
@gomez @davidoclubb @anniemo71 @otso that warning is overly alarming and i've heard chatter that Tor Browser devs might remove the warning in future versions.
@otso @otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez do other onion sites work for you? When I click "Accept the Risk and Continue", it takes me to the search form.
@otso @anniemo71 @davidoclubb @gomez I can't explain it then. Some people are still trapped on onion v2 (like one of my machines), but then if that were the case you wouldn't even get the warning screen. You might try booting a recent Tails live disk and see if it works. Any other #Tor users having problems reaching sercxi.nnpaefp7pkadbxxkhz2agtbv2a4g5sgo2fbmv3i7czaua354334uqqad.onion ?
Unfortunately the clearnet address doesn't appear to work and using tor is not always an option

@iron_bug @anniemo71 @gomez @davidoclubb Ss is not searx; it's custom. But wrt searx, no kid in moms basement is financially equipped to exploit data to the extent of #GAFAM. We're talking very costly AI.
@davidoclubb @gomez @anniemo71 @iron_bug Facebook is even figuring out which of their users are gay with very high accuracy. You don't have to worry about searx (FOSS s/w) doing that.
@iron_bug @anniemo71 @gomez @davidoclubb i sense some sympathy for tech giants (as you equated scraping Google/MS results with "stealing"). IMO scraping their results is the best scenario, because it uses the resources of tech giants without compensating them, which means not only not feeding privacy abusers, but costing them. That's a good thing.
@iron_bug @anniemo71 @gomez @davidoclubb @iron_bug #DDG has /proven/ to violate their privacy policy: http://techrights.org/2021/03/15/duckduckgo-in-2021/ An unknown is of course more worthy of trust than a known cheater. Garage operations just don't have the capital to finance a large scale AI engine.. Only very big money interests behind GAFAM have that kind of cash to invest.

Thank you very much, very helpful
