is switching from plastic to paper for food containers-- for environmental reasons. I thought the kind of waxy paper that is coated for waterproofing is not recycleable, so what am I missing?

@resist1984
There are starch-based 'plastics' that degrade.

@gemlog indeed, so that's another reason not to ban plastic & switch to paper. What is Japan thinking?

@resist1984
No idea. I thought maybe they are coating it w/ starch v wax.

@resist1984 Well even if they can't recycle it with other paper products because of the wax, at least the paper will break down naturally as opposed to hanging around forever like plastic does. There will still be waste going to landfills, but much less harmful, biodegradable waste, unless the wax is made of something shady that I'm not aware of.

@resist1984 because people want to pretend they're helping but don't want to be inconvenienced that much so they just do something stupid instead

@resist1984 The giant plastic island in the middle of the ocean

My assumption is the waxy paper is more biodegradable than plastic...
