A response to the Harper's Letter: “The intellectual freedom of cis white intellectuals has never been under threat en masse, especially when compared to how writers from marginalized groups have been treated for generations.” bit.ly/2ZZDnk7

@diabola this is the third response Ive read to The Letter and it is by far the best one

@diabola ai cant remember the 2nd one but thw first one I strongly disagreed with and felt like the author missed much of the point. Let me see if I can find it for you

@ItsJenNotGabby Thanks so much! I took a read and it kinda rambled but I think the author addressed power dynamics. What do you think it's missing?

@diabola well, the thing I think that most people are missing is that "cancel culture" as a whole, isnt bad in my opinion. Accountability is not censorship. Most of these people still have a very powerful platform, but CC is also supposed to be for intra-community use as well. And I like that we're moving from callouts to call ins. But I think also theres a real lack of discussion that when you get called out, if you get "cancelled" 1/2

@onepict @ItsJenNotGabby @diabola "Accountability is not censorship." Spot on. Those on the receiving end of expect to retain their megaphone, their voice with widespread exposure even when they say stupid shit. The whole principle of is that good ideas are carried as far as they're worth & bad ideas naturally fall under their own dead weight.

Follow

@diabola @ItsJenNotGabby @onepict Cancel culture helps bad ideas die naturally and that's a good thing. And when celebs lose their megaphone, that's not , it's an adjustment that puts their voice down at the level of everyone else w/out prestige.
