A response to the Harper's Letter: “The intellectual freedom of cis white intellectuals has never been under threat en masse, especially when compared to how writers from marginalized groups have been treated for generations.” https://bit.ly/2ZZDnk7
@diabola this is the third response Ive read to The Letter and it is by far the best one
@ItsJenNotGabby There are others? Were they any good?
@diabola ai cant remember the 2nd one but thw first one I strongly disagreed with and felt like the author missed much of the point. Let me see if I can find it for you
@ItsJenNotGabby Thanks so much! I took a read and it kinda rambled but I think the author addressed power dynamics. What do you think it's missing?
@onepict @ItsJenNotGabby @diabola "Accountability is not censorship." Spot on. Those on the receiving end of #cancelCulture expect to retain their megaphone, their voice with widespread exposure even when they say stupid shit. The whole principle of #FreeSpeech is that good ideas are carried as far as they're worth & bad ideas naturally fall under their own dead weight.
@diabola @ItsJenNotGabby @onepict Cancel culture helps bad ideas die naturally and that's a good thing. And when celebs lose their megaphone, that's not #censorship, it's an adjustment that puts their voice down at the level of everyone else w/out prestige.
