Like the whole culture around eating meat is meant to distance oneself from the harm of it.

Cow flesh —- Beef
Pig flesh —- Pork

People don’t consider fish to be even animals at times so lol (v2.jacky.wtf/post/aff34872-928)

@jalcine fish is different enough from other meats (taste, nutrition, farming, etc) that I don't find it too bizarre to make that separation. w.r.t societal harm, fishing doesn't cause & probably doesn't have a significant carbon footprint.

@resist1984 @jalcine overfishing and modern fishing practices do contribute significantly to the deoxification of whole habitats however, creating what are called deadzones.

Essentially, ecological destruction doesn't just boil down to carbon emissions, and not fishing will always require less fuel than fishing.

@seasharp @jalcine isn't it overly blunt to group all fish species together? I thought some fish are severely overfished, whereas Mackrel in the UK is quite unpopular & not in the slightest at risk for overfishing. A fish consumer could obviously overfished species.

@resist1984

Removing Jackie as he requested.

i think its overly destructive to try and rationalize unecessary harm by compartmentalizing it rather than just avoiding doing what's unnecessary, personally. Overfishing is a demand problem, not a species problem

@seasharp i agree all non-vegan consumption is harmful -- the extent of which varies depending what's being consumed. Vegan's are the most ethical consumers, of course. But those who cannot (or will not) go vegan obviously have some control over how & what they cut back on. It's a false dichotomy to say "demand not species". It's a problem of disproportionate demand on species.

@resist1984 overfishing is not a problem of proportionate demand. The evidence is not relegated to a single species. Unless that species is humans.
@resist1984 i'd like to also clarify that necessary vs unnecessary is a valid dichotomy, subject to the availability of vegan options, as youve mentioned.
