I plan to create a Facebook account only for its Marketplace and communicate with groups that rely on Facebook Messenger for communication. I'll be following recommended steps to mitigate data collection with Facebook's own settings menu, but is there anything I can do beyond that? I'll be using it on my iPhone as well but I'll try to avoid downloading the app and use the web interface as much as possible. I have Instagram already though so is my concern here already null and void?

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat A more intimate community of those who balance seriousness with kindness and humility? πŸ˜…

@Wetrix πŸ˜† You should get a Facebook page then. 😝

@gritnot that's my thought process actually. πŸ˜†πŸ‘πŸΌ

So why do YOU care about online privacy? Is it more because of how businesses sell your data? Or more about your data being exposed in breaches? Or another reason altogether.
How far are you willing to go with online privacy and why?

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat why wouldn't using the default social media sites with no accounts and inprivate tabs not be good enough?

@soudk isn't that always the case? I feel like all these roms are effectively assuming you're OK with losing a good camera. If I didn't rely heavily on my smartphone cameras, I would switch to Lineage OS in a heartbeat.

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat @soudk wouldn't it be harmless to have Google APKs with Play Services removed? Especially Gcam APKs.

@sp1rit Gotcha. To the level that a complete noob would be able to decipher it all? Or would you have to have some knowledge of code and things to comprehend?

And why wouldn't Mozilla of all communities make sure they aren't an exception? Sad. πŸ˜•

@Wetrix man, I won't have to create custom containers anymore! I hated how I had a page open in container "Personal" and I would like to have opened a link in "Banking" for example. But you get so used to using the scroll wheel to open new links in new tabs so it opens the link in the same container! πŸ˜… Now all web pages can be opened in separate containers automatically. Love it.

@sp1rit What is a Github resource usually supposed to display? I don't know how to read Github stuff.

I'm so close! I got my router configured with the new DDNS service (no-ip). I'm now at the port forwarding stage and port forwarding 80 works but I don't want that. Forwarding port 443 fails and I have to find out why that is. As soon as I get past this step, I'll be shooting to get an SSL cert to make the connection official.

Any help would be very appreciated. :)

Never mind. My router only supports two DDNS services and only one of which is free. I have no option but to use No-IP Dynamic DNS. Hope this is a good service!

I don't see any recommendations for DDNS services on the Privacy Tools website. I wonder why. Like, would ClouDNS be OK? I'm trying to get my Nextcloud server accessible externally and I guess I'd like a free DDNS service to help make that happen. I wonder if that is asking for too much. πŸ˜…

@EmbraceTheGray So the YouTube video I watched took me to ubuntu.com/appliance. On this website, I selected Nextcloud -> Intel NUC. The installation instructions are laid out here. The video made the same choices and I had an old Intel computer. Not a NUC but still Intel.

I just set up my first server ever! Went with Nextcloud for some file sharing. I had to go to YouTube looking for a walk-through but I got it running as its own appliance. πŸ˜ƒ Now to get it accessible externally...
