OK, I've just been sent a photo of an Italian textbook aimed at roughly Year 11 where they use ":" for division.

Euch.

I need a shower.

I also studied when I was i elementary to do division with ":", and it was in textbooks too. They changed that when I was 6th or 7th grade.

@nikolal So what did they use to talk about ratios? For example, I have two apples and three oranges - what is the ratio of apples to oranges?

Did they talk about odds in betting? For example, the odds are 2 to 7.

I'm intrigued that ":" could be used for division when in other places it's used for ratios.

Oh well, I don't remember. But I know that was replaced and teachers were very happy about it
