Yes, 8 GBs is overkill unless you have a beast computer with lots of RAM. I see more precise in this article you linked how to choose swap space, I always did 5 GBs and didn't mind how much RAM I have. Not that it matters much if its 5 or 10 GBs, most people don't use up all their space on their HDD or SSD.
