Fishing with some old man with one leg. You don't really get to meet interesting people living in a city, even though people are packed on top of each other like sardines, people get desensitized to other people and never really let anyone see who they are. People become like cracks in the sidewalk that you never remember, but when you walk out into nowhere to do nothing and run into someone else doing the same thing you pay attention.
Here's an uncalled for explanation about something that's bothering me…
When you're asking a question on the Fediverse about something I know and might answer, but your nickname contains this little defying hammer and sickle sign… I, coming from the country that used to flaunt it, read it as "I support slave labor and institutionalized mass murder", which makes me far less likely to engage in any discussion with you.
(I'm pretty sure you might disagree. Your ignorance is your problem.)
So maybe someone knows the answer to this. A few days ago I rage quit Riot.im/matrix.org and lo and behold 2 days later they release an update allowing cross signing to solve the friction with regard to verification. So I tried to test it out. Turns out, if you have no active session you cannot ever verify your sessions again, apparently. Unless there's something that is not so apparent?
Does anyone reading this know how to verify your only session in Riotx or riot desktop?
Looking for a good social proof solution following Keybase's acquisition this morning? Check out @wiktor's decentralized solution built on PGP! https://metacode.biz/openpgp/proofs I'm setting my key up now 😄
Zoom acquired Keybase today.
Keybase helped me to identify a trend in the software industry: using a pretty UI to cover up the disruption of an open ecosystem with a closed, centralized replacement. Keybase seemed cool on the face of it - making encryption easier is a laudible goal, and PGP certainly could use the improvement. But, thanks to Keybase, now I ask different questions upfront.
Beware the Keybase formula:
1. Integrates with an existing, open ecosystem
2. May have open-source clients, but server is closed source and does not federate
3. Pretty UI and good marketing
4. VC funded
I spent social capital promoting Matrix and getting users within my social group, for what? So that they could spend more time verifying everyone on every device they own than they do talking to each other? Cross checking fucking emojis? Are you kidding me?
Man Rust is the shit! The compiler will build markdown documentation for you from comments in your code if you want it to! I have heard of stuff like this in other languages but never realized how powerful it is, a major problem in development is lack of documentation, and that is usually because the maintainers do not want to sit down and build documents. If you can do it while building though it makes everything so much easier.
Why is Riot such a dumpster fire? The Matrix protocol has so much potential and yet NewVector just manage to build hot garbage and prevent the protocol from gaining a wider user base. Why on earth is key exchange in Riot such a pain in the ass? If you sign out and then sign back in every single person in every single room you're in must manually verify your session. If you use it with any seriousness this absolutely breaks usability. Why did they introduce such a massive point of friction?
@butterfly you're awesome. Keep being you.
Why am I unable to fetch media from social.privacytools.io with third party client applications? This is so strange, I cannot fetch any media at all through this account, not even my own avatar.
@jonah perhaps you're aware or need to be aware of it.

I do not recognize anyone’s right to one minute of my life. Nor to any part of my energy. Nor to any achievement of mine. No matter who makes the claim, how large their number or how great their need.
