Does the weird freezing bug happen when you play remote streams? Like from mounted remote filesystems? I'm guessing your freezing bug causes VLC to not be able to close and you can't play media files until you restart the system, correct?

Correct, but not just remote streams, also with local media files

I've dealt with that also, I believe it is a codec problem. I've dealt with it in Arch and Debian systems as well, usually with remote filesystems I just unmount the drive and VLC will then stop. I've never been able to fix it but I am certain it is an issue with a codec.
