"Privacy Basics" will be our first downloadable guide.

One of the issues we identified with #privacy is that many home and #business users simply do not do basic things to protect themselves.

This can be because of perceived complexity or not having a perception of the depth by which people are #tracked. Sometimes, this is summed up as "There is nothing I can do" or "It doesn't matter", but there is and it does.

We believe that, over time, we can course-correct our ways when we act together.

#Parents, when managing your #children's devices, consider not utilizing apps that pervasively track their whereabouts 24/7.

Apps that give #location tracking and audio\video feedback can be taken advantage of to harm your children.

Teaching kids about online and in-person safety would make them more independent and safe than this.

These systems are also used for spying on significant others by proxy, especially in situations with mental and physical abuse.

I have some INCREDIBLY exciting news. I’m going to be working full time on free software!

Specifically, I have been awarded an EU grant to work on spectrum-os.org, a security-through-compartmentalization-based operating system in the style of Qubes, powered and managed by Nix.

Anti-Piracy Efforts Are Unlikely to Beat @Sci_Hub - torrentfreak.com/anti-piracy-e why would any sane person want to "beat" a service to humanity?

Congrats to the FastMail folks for helping modernize and secure email comms for the 21st century.

We’re making email more modern with JMAP

The specifications for JMAP Email have been published by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), marking a big victory for email tools now and in the future.

android ad-blocking app suggestion

I keep seeing people who don't know about it, so

reminder that Blokada is an app that exists for Android that uses Android's built-in VPN system (which does not require root) to perform adblocking, tracker blocking, etc, and it can also redirect all DNS queries to a server of your choosing

the disadvantage is it counts as a VPN and so it can't run in parallel with any other VPN software

"Ring, the smart doorbell home security system Amazon bought for over $1 billion last year, is involved in some fairly unnerving arrangements with local law enforcement agencies. Wouldn’t you like to know if the cops in your town are among them?"

We have some exciting news!

Our next experiment involves improving federated privacy and security in Pixelfed.

We will be testing ActivityPub + OCAP for the Stories feature which will be released later this month.

This will only effect Pixelfed instances, we plan to support other ActivityPub implementations in the future.

Golly, can't believe I didn't notice the simpler way to verify via keybase until now. Got to do this tomorrow! Too bad one of my Mastodon account is on a v2.6 instance (2.8 is needed)
