Great overview of the issues with advertising: http://jacek.zlydach.pl/blog/2019-07-31-ads-as-cancer.html
There is a need to spread awareness of your offerings to the people who need them, but advertising has long ago gone beyond that to something actively harmful.

"People who work on social software are closer in spirit to economists and political scientists than they are to people making compilers. They both look like programming, but when you’re dealing with groups of people as one of your runtime phenomena, you have an incredibly different practice."

The Irish have teeth: Facebook wants to roll out dating but provides no documentation. The Irish data protection commission invades their office and takes docs. Facebook stops the roll-out. #Facebook keeps copying apps. Meanwhile the blue app still doesn't have a working dark mode months after Android 10 and iOS 13

@glitcher32 phone numbers as IDs are horrible indeed. Especially when services sometimes intentionally block throwaway numbers from being used for registering! (eg Telegram blocks some Google Voice numbers).
Kind of effed up to have the same identifier you're forced to give away to companies to get services as part of online identities - good game, now you can't be anonymous. Harder to get throwaway phone numbers than anonymized email handles after all.

Hello, I'm new to Mastodon. I'm here because, after reading Shoshana Zuboff's The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, I'm astonished and outraged that companies like Google, Facebook, and a growing list of other companies are treating us as the means to other's ends. Our experiences both online and, increasingly, offline are being extracted, rendered, and sold to bidders at auction. Forgive me, here I am preaching to the choir. So hello again, I look forward to listening and learning from you.
@Wetrix someone pointed out on Reddit that this still doesn't help those who don't use Facebook - a shadow profile still accumulates about them (to be fair LinkedIn's implementation is way worse, you can see these profiles and trying to connect to them nag them to create an account!)
Looking forward to some influential government banning shadow profiling and seeing adtech companies' beards be set on fire. There seems to be no internal motivation to address it.

Facebook, politics, surveillance, Puerto Rico
A timely reminder not to blindly trust platforms:
- #PuertoRico justice department investigated student demonstration, got overly broad search warrant issued
- #Facebook released data on interactions with student media covering demonstration in that time period
- the individuals involved didn't get notified even after the 90-day gag period, only found out when a lawmaker investigated
