have a look at MailDroid, it has a lot of features, their customer's data usage is clear, it's not expensive for what it offers.
@merdo it's...well, not open-source. But perhaps anything is better than Google, at least until something else comes along.

Yeah I know, I've been through this route before and at last MailDroid was my only valid option. K-9 otherwise. But it's ugly as hell and has huge UX/UI problems.
