The Portuguese navigator Fernão do Pó, the first European to visit the island in 1472 named it #FormosaFlora (Beautiful Flower), but in 1494 it was renamed by Europeans as #FernãoDoPó and later the name of the island is changed from Pó to Póo, so the islands Name was #FernandoPóo. Under the Africanization policy of dictator Masie Nguema Biyogo it was renamed #MasieNguemeBiyogo Island. The island's native name in the Bube language is #Otcho. The modern name is #Bioko.
