Apple and NPR
@imgn
NPR is also funded by Google, Facebook, and Amazon thanks to the us gov defunding it a long time ago. It is sadly no longer a public service.
What if I don't want to tell Zuckerberg where I am and what I am eating for dinner?
This is what I say to restaurants who tell me to scan a code or place my order via app. I only pay cash. Refuse and resist #SurveillanceCapitalism
@thenewoil
The US looks to be far behind the Germans in surveilling the surveillors. Get mapping everybody!
Here is a map that shows surveillance cameras already. https://sunders.uber.space/
I can see that the Germans are working much harder than the Americans at logging these. The only cameras mapped in my town were done by me.
@thenewoil
They could have simply increased taxes on gasoline, but they want the location data and to avoid inflation that would be caused by a gas tax. Today the US is telling OPEC to produce more oil to reduce inflation which the US created. Yesterday the IPCC and UN announced code red on climate change because of too much carbon. Very troubling times..
The feature that made Waze more popular than Google maps until Google bought them was the crowdsourced identification of speed traps.
https://www.osm.org has the ability to log face traps (surveillance/facial recognition cameras). I have been mapping them as points of type: surveillance.
Some mobile mapping apps such as #OrganicMaps could show these features to help us know how to safely navigate around town. Edit your neighborhood maps.
@thenewoil I become irritable and do not sleep well when I know I am under surveillance. Amazon watching me sleep is a nightmare.
@resist1984 Perhaps tell the maker of this product the problem and let them find you an option or reassess their selling strategy. I do this once in a while, and I am sure it is having some effect.
@kingofjupiter Sounds like a fun job right? I have lately been mapping the surveillance and facial recognition cameras in my area on osm.org. This map feeds several map apps, and the developers I talked to at Organicmaps agree it would be a great idea to add these to the display. Like Waze shows speed traps, they could show face traps.
@kingofjupiter I signed this even though I never plan to use an Ithing. I did it for your benefit and the kids I know stuck in their ecosystem. I hope you sign on as well. https://freeradical.zone/@thenewoil/106726648829756399

Thanks. Read it already. I prefer living in the real world as ugly as it might be.
I listened to this on yesterday's ride. For most of my life working in the sw industry, I did not understand or appreciate the importance of freedom. https://www.cmpod.net/all-transcripts/history-open-source-free-software-text/
Why Captcha Pictures Are So Unbearably Depressing - https://clivethompson.medium.com/why-captcha-pictures-are-so-unbearably-depressing-20679b8cf84a
@thenewoil They should pay us to watch us. It is such a mystery to me why anyone would pay to be surveilled.
@resist1984 I agree we need to crowd compile a DB of stores/companies using facial recognition. I just stopped at a Rite Aid and saw the new cylindrical camera called Wise on the register. They told me it was for facial recognition. I told the manager Fuck you. I won't be coming back here again. If I must get anything there, I will be wearing a paper bag over my head. I think the paper bag over head icon is what we need on #OrganicMaps
@resist1984 @yngmar Awesome, but I think they will just chalk that up to a cost of doing business. Asking Amazon not to surveill is like asking a Giraffe to shorten its neck.
I lived around the world helping some giants as a useful idiot. I am now more selective of where I spend my efforts. I am excited to grow the federation and help the kids around me learn digital safety.
I am in northern California on the water at the base of hills. I tend a garden, paddle the bay, swing rings, and lift logs and chains when I am not developing software and loving those near me.
