Facial recognition technology will be supplemented with smell recognition technology:

@hackernews Now smell can be digitized. https://www.aromyx.com/
In addition to masks, we will need to wear special perfumes.
@thenewoil Sorry for sounding like a dick. I was just making sure everybody realizes the problem with location data, especially if you are a priest.
@aral Great questions most DDG users will not ask. I applaud them for adding the feature and raising awareness even if it is closed source and subject to changes in TOS. I will stick with FOSS anonaddy.com or simplelogin.com with the clearurls add on in my browser to ensure nobody is collecting metadata.
@resist1984
My flawed memory thought it came from G, but that might have been years ago and has changed to Bing as you say. "He who controls the past, controls the future." So MS is to gain with DDG. Owning Lockedin and Github and escaping current antitrust scrutiny puts them in a powerful position.
@gritnot Sometimes people see things as binary. Resistance is futile. It takes a little explaining to convince them that it is not an all or nothing situation. The more privacy you can retain, the more power you have over your own destiny. This article kind of explains the situation. https://reallifemag.com/personal-panopticons/
@resist1984 My memory failed. I corrected that.
@resist1984 Thanks for reminding me of the age old marketing tactic spiffed up in the digital age. DDG is still better than Google even though it gets results from Google. I only recommend DDG to very few because of its ease of use. I recommend Searx to everybody who can take more than a minute and a few more steps to improve their digital hygiene.
@gritnot I do honestly ask myself regularly if I am being paranoid, and I have almost always concluded that I am not. Although our instance is focused on technical tools, I like to focus on tools to help us raise awareness with those who have been intentionally misled. My advice is to first understand where a person is in understanding. For the completely unaware, one or two basic questions can help them start to think about it.
@thenewoil
How can anyone truly anonymize location data?
Location data shows where someone sleeps and goes to work or school as well as the bars and doctors one visits. It is not complicated to figure out who one is. Location tracking should be banned, but until then:
Disable location, WIFI scanning, bluetooth scanning and use GPS based locally stored maps such as #OrganicMaps or other OSM.org maps. Telcos will still have location, and even an anonymous SIM can unmask you based on location.
A key product of ubiquitous surveillance is people who are comfortable with it - https://reallifemag.com/personal-panopticons/
@resist1984 This is why I still wear a bandana even though I am vaxed. It would be cool if something like #OrganicMaps would have face recognition present icons π§ on every location where they are known or suspected similar to how Waze shows speed traps. Establishments that have affirmed they will never use it would be tagged as safe. Then we could navigate safely and easily boycott the bad places..
@resist1984 Papers are often a tool for generating sales leads. Most fingerprinting tactics are being foiled by us, and email addresses are one of the main tools being used now. Email aliasing is a such a critical tool for avoiding identification nowadays. Thank you anonaddy.com and simplelogin.com. If a site will not accept one of those, I usually run away from it.
@freddy Definitely another techtrap. Once I need to buy a car, it will have just a speedometer, temp, and gas gauge until a FOSS car is available. Unfortunately the masses are falling for it just as they do every other shiny smart device.
@pluralistic Facebook is stalkerware pure and simply.
@hackernews Why is a top executive privy to Google's vast data universe deciding to move where the billionaires have built their doomsday bunkers?
@EmbraceTheGray good move. Educating my mom and others has taken time but is a labor of love. Someday they will realize that they are privileged to have us.
@EmbraceTheGray Yes there is a concerted effort to ensure everybody is tracked. 4G enables very exact location. I looked at phones junkies living on the street were using, and they were similar. The government is giving them to all the street people along with debit cards to also track their transactions. This is going on around the world, and the most vulnerable and least technical people are being datafied. I gave my whole family de-googled phones, but this is a drop in the bucket.
I am agitated and do not sleep well when I know I am under surveillance. How is this going to help?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-09/amazon-com-wants-to-monitor-you-in-your-sleep-for-your-benefit
Is it not enough that they already monitor our viewing(Prime,MGM,Twitch), listening(Audible,Music), reading(Kindle), shopping, internet(AWS), location(apps), and our house(Ring,Alexa)? The toilet is perhaps the only experience they are not monitoring.. yet π© #SurveillanceCapitalism
Sharing this joke with my girlfriend and others really helped diffuse some tensions, and I hope it works for you too.π
I lived around the world helping some giants as a useful idiot. I am now more selective of where I spend my efforts. I am excited to grow the federation and help the kids around me learn digital safety.
I am in northern California on the water at the base of hills. I tend a garden, paddle the bay, swing rings, and lift logs and chains when I am not developing software and loving those near me.
