what my girlfriend thought dating a software engineer would be like: "honey, I got an AI robot maid to do all our cooking for us"

what dating a software engineer is actually like: "if that microwave connects to the internet we're heating all our food with a blowtorch from now on"

Today we are celebrating independence from the data colonialists.

@lnx
I already did that and my phone is 95% FOSS. Sometimes no FOSS solution is available. I was amazed at the level surveillance in this single app.

After ignoring ~20 unrecognized calls yesterday, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to have caller ID on my even though number spoofing is rampant. The first listed caller ID app in Google Play Store (Aurora) has a very impressive privacy report. 22 trackers and 52 permissions! Wow! reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/

@thenewoil I fixed a couple devices with an axe simply because I would not want to transfer the cursed devices to someone else. This provides more confirmation of the efficacy of the axe method.

@resist1984 I use any of the solid protocols, of which we now have many. Unfortunately I use Signal the most because it is hard to get most people I know to even understand the concepts of client and server let alone decentralization 😬. I am educating those around me when I can, but it is a chasm created by GAFAM that hides the technical complexity from the sheep grazing on their feeds (pun intended).

@thenewoil
-No mention of how AI will use that data to reprogram us.
-No mention of alternatives and solutions in FOSS and decentralized services
-Ironic that he asks people to follow him on Instagram
I understand that only so much can fit in a video, but the video creates more apathy and feeling of helplessness.

Thanks to everybody's attention and hard work creating data for Facebook, the company is now valued at $1 trillion. Sorry, but none of that money will be disbursed to you.

@Decentralize_today Amazon's whole business is data which is the most valuable commodity in the world. Their low priced consumer and business products are merely vehicles of collecting more data. This is the lens to understanding them and similar companies.

The #ACCESSAct is the most important tech law in decades, using interoperability to weaken the grip of Big Tech on our digital lives. It was passed out of committee this week. Next step: a vote by the House. eff.org/deeplinks/2021/06/acce

@freddy I totally agree about traditional advertising being a waste of resources in most of what we can provide. Marketing more broadly can be done by all of us at low cost and more effectively by sharing the alternatives to those we know. I contribute wherever I can to both helping to build as well as distribute. Thank you for your good work.

@freddy I agree, but it is a fact that most people are totally unaware of what FOSS even is, much less the options. The marketing budgets of megatech are enormous and influence what is published, available in stores.. Most people never see the subreddits or HN. So we all need to be marketers of tech freedom to those we engage with. It is kind of a part time job of mine to promote the most important privacy tools: ideas and awareness.

@freddy Most people just don't know the methods to be private because the solutions are FOSS that spend $0 on marketing. I try to explain this to people and tell them that the things I do are easy, although not mentioning how difficult it is to get out of some of the tech traps and the time it took me to figure things out. I also emphasize that it is fun and liberating and offer help to anybody.

Instead of the red pills I requested, I realized that my dealer had been giving me blue pills painted red.

@thenewoil
At first reporting it looked like onion routing, but this shows it is far from it with these companies involved.

@hackernews I am so excited to have Facebook monitor my podcast listening and conversations! or downloaded via VPN for podcasting. @Owncast or @Jitsi for live discussions.
