@resist1984 It seems most gadgets these days have planned obsolescence or no right to repair. I still cook over a wood fire.π
@pluralistic I love the prisoners inventions and draw parallels to the innovations in FOSS to avoid surveillance. I often tell people that even though some GACC(Government, AI, Corp Controlled) software is very trapping, a fox will chew off his own foot to escape.
@hackernews Let the rich fume and give us the same old justifications for delaying taxes to infinity. They have so much data on us, and we have so little on them until now. Tax wealth, not workers.
@tika Yes there are more genuine videos and information out there. Gizmodo is a platform to sell big tech. We need to give context when further propagating the propaganda that says: "Resistance is futile. Bow down and adopt our tools of surveillance."
@kravietz @InsertUser Ethical companies with the capacity to manage data this way are unfortunately few. Companies will be making a trade off decision: Let them leak the personal data and deal with consequences or pay the ransom. I doubt the companies will be held accountable for the breaches. We should expect massive leaks of personal data to come.

@atoponce @techsaviours Yes there is a trade off between security and privacy at times. Pwd managers have weak points. Managers allow some of us to have variable fingerprints with different browsers/apps and compartmentalize Google to Chrome, MS to Edge, Mastodon and its news links to TOR.. A super browser that would choose the right underlying browser automatically based on the URL entered would be slick, but thinking it through, it quickly seemed too complex. Brave is balanced.
@atoponce @techsaviours If you mean syncing of bookmarks, https://www.xbrowsersync.org/ is awesome and cross browser. Sync creds with Keypass or Bitwarden. I recommend Brave to my mom and others who will not figure out all the browser settings some of us love to tinker with. I use just about every browser but for different purposes to compartmentalize activities.
@atoponce @techsaviours Yes Librewolf is a privatized Firefox with integrated Ublock. If security is your higher concern, and you don't want the Brave additions, try Ungoogled Chromium https://ungoogled-software.github.io/
I just finished listening to Cryptonomicon (using Libby and someone else's library card). https://wikiless.org/wiki/Cryptonomicon?lang=en
I see why it is required reading for management at big tech companies. It is both very entertaining and educational about the tactics of espionage and the importance of encryption. The extensive and creative tactics to prevent their targets from suspecting they are being spied on are insightful. Does anyone have other recommendations of the like?
@Wetrix You can replace reddit.com in the URL with teddit.net when sharing links to avoid the many trackers in Reddit and allow it to be read in TOR. More client tips here: https://github.com/pluja/awesome-privacy#reddit
@allsyed Be suspicious of any stock OS. If you want a more private phone, you might find some mod options in https://www.xda-developers.com/ for your device. If it were me, I would use the ROG5 for gaming and anonymous activities after removing the SIM and setting it up with no personal identifiers. I would use VPN and Orbot. Then I would use another device with a FOSS OS such as Graphene, Calyx, or LineageOS as an actual phone. I am sorry I have no better device advice.
@allsyed It probably is and leads you to think otherwise. Fooling you is critical for successful espionage. What OS are you using?

@thenewoil The big G knows its days of unfettered surveillance is drawing down and is under significant pressure on many fronts. They must provide these options, albeit limited, to satisfy regulatory and PR pressures. G is moving up the technology stack to ensure their AI is fed a healthy diet of data. Partnerships with Salesforce, T-mobile, and others are part of that strategy.
I watched yet another keynote speech by one of the big tech companies in CX(Customer Experience) space. They talk a lot about reading customer sentiment and providing personalized experiences. This is business speak for personal data acquisition and consumer manipulation. The company name does not matter as it is a common spiel I hear from all of them.
The data economy depends on violating our right to privacy on a massive scale, collecting as much personal data as possible for profit.
@privacyint The fear of Arab youth for using the big social media platforms should be even higher. What they are using shows they need more tech education to learn about alternative federated platforms, pseudoanonymity, Tor.. 7amleh seems suspicious as they encourage people to follow them on the big surveilled platforms and do not have a presence in the fediverse or other safer platforms.
I lived around the world helping some giants as a useful idiot. I am now more selective of where I spend my efforts. I am excited to grow the federation and help the kids around me learn digital safety.
I am in northern California on the water at the base of hills. I tend a garden, paddle the bay, swing rings, and lift logs and chains when I am not developing software and loving those near me.
