I just set up my first server ever! Went with Nextcloud for some file sharing. I had to go to YouTube looking for a walk-through but I got it running as its own appliance. πŸ˜ƒ Now to get it accessible externally...

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat This is worthy of an entirely different thread to discuss why MS would pay $7B for Github and what their plans might be to later make it profitable.

@ThreeBadgersInATrenchcoat @thedeltaflyer I think github is great but probably not the best place to develop a product competing with MS.

@thedeltaflyer
If anybody wants to start developing it, it should not be on github which is also owned by Microsoft.

What is the federated alternative to Linkedin?

Encrypt or be/get ripped, nipped..
I am trying to come up with a catchy slogan to use in footers of my communications that sticks in peoples' heads. Respond with any and all wacky or not phrases.

@basvanhaastregt Sorry I only read your full post after voting and responding. Signal hosting on AWS is a vulnerability. Although backdoors are absent, Amazon could shut down the servers like they did Parler. I expect that to be unlikely because of the backlash and that Moxie has a contingency plan. It is just the easiest service for the less competent people to use and adopt. We all can relate with the difficulty of getting some people to encrypt. XMPP and Matrix are my preferred.

@basvanhaastregt
I suggest adding signal and telegram in your next poll. My grandma can use Signal. I avoid Telegram but it is popular nonetheless.

@syntax It is annoying. The answer is money. They make more money by renting and ensuring you cannot share your books with friends as well as getting revenue from intelligence collectors. A few stores such as orbooks.com/ allow you to buy outright without DRM rather than rent. It is often possible to remove the DRM from EPUB's with something like Calibre, but it is a hassle. I recently made ebooks.com/ refund my purchase after finding I had to use their spying app.

@redcoqui I agree that drivers can be a challenge, but HW manufacturers will support the needed platforms and standards prevalent such as RISC5. The big challenge for Linux and most FOSS solutions at enterprise level is money influences and high politics around IT. I have been in the industry most of my life and constantly deal with architecture that was seemingly decided on a golf course.

@redcoqui I was responding to the discussion basically saying that I am good with using Linux personally to meet all my needs, but I have not seen Linux adopted as the desktop or mobile standard at the enterprise level. I would love to see it, and I think it is possible. I agree driver and other support is better in Linux.

@kravietz Zuckbook and others are now trying to sue NSO Group out of existence. They are seemingly more concerned with their reputation than how it destroyed Kashoggi and others. See the Dissident.

@redcoqui Yes Windows is like religion at my company. I only use Windows for work. I do not know why I did not switch to Linux for personal earlier. I am curious to know which significant companies have been able to switch their desktop environments completely to Linux and what challenges they had. I suspect that some of the things we do not like about Windows for personal use is loved by the company admins, namely the ability to centrally monitor and control the desktops.
