MS somehow got a pass from the new administration with no scrutiny. It could be that the FTC and SEC have way too much to deal with already with Google, Facebook, and Amazon, or it could be this: bigtechsellswar.com/

@AbrasiveAnglo
That is because executive orders from the executive branch cannot easily be enforced against the other two branches, legislative and judicial. It is a system of checks and balances. Employees of executive branch are mandated.

@thenewoil I was hanging out with my friend last weekend who helped design this at FB. I did a great job of not laughing when she told me about it. Everybody at the party knew not to take any pictures of me.

I predict that the FB glasses and the VR headset aimed for business will be complete flops. To makeup the revenue shortfall, FB will squeeze more revenue from its existing assets: peoples' data. They say they do not directly sell data, but they can change terms of service anytime. If you still have an account, protect yourself by pouring extra salt in it to be an enigma to the data brokers who will buy it. Random searches, confusing posts, unfriending, random likes.. newsbots.eu/@vice/106903130969

@drq @aral Government imposes values more overtly in China and always has. It is a very different culture and government. To be clear, I never said it is alright or good. I live in the west and have no control or influence over what is done there. My point is to not let us in the west fall into the trap of being compared to China if we clampdown in any way on GAFAM's similar exploitation of children. I am afraid this is the subtle idea conveyed in some reports.

@aral The imposition of government cultural values is being used by western corp media to attack the Chinese clampdown on BAT. Be careful of the bait to convince westerners to oppose any clampdown on GAFAM in gaming. These modern games are highly addictive with heavy surveillance and behavior modification. Kids and their parents in the west do not realize what they are getting into with Xbox, Occulus, etc. We should do it differently than China but how remains the question.

@thenewoil GACC( Government, AI, Corporate Controlled) social media such as Zuckbook and other platforms have long been feeding SAAS(Surveillance as a Service) companies like wikiless.org/wiki/Dataminr to feed governments and corporations with information. This is why we are here using FOSS social media.

@anarchoN3rd Any mail provider is subject to the laws of the country in which they operate and host. I blame Swiss legal authorities here more than Proton.
Self hosting is a challenge, but some solutions exist to make it easier such as arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/1 Big providers like Proton handle much of the admin that some of us are a little too busy to deal with. Email can only ever achieve certain limits of privacy. Other protocols are much better.

@anarchoN3rd @thenewoil I use both Proton VPN and mail, but if my threat model changes, I will switch VPN and keep Proton mail.

Even though I think it important to help my friends and family with the tools, I stress it much harder with my activist friends.

@redcoqui If you are trying to segregate your marketplace account from your Insta account, you need to practice compartmentalization. How far you must go depends on the devices/OS/applications you have available. It is possible, but you are up against one of the most advanced ID management platforms.

@anarchoN3rd @thenewoil
Using TOR would give him more protection from being uncovered.

Although troubling that the Swiss authorities would give in to a request like this, this is a lesson to anybody with this threat model. Email can only ever achieve certain levels of protection. They should switch to XMPP or another protocol.

@chris Yep it is a step back in features, but I used to travel the world with nothing but tattered paper maps. The teams at OSM.org and Organic Maps are improving the solution. I update osm.org regularly and encourage others to contribute. Google both tracks and guides. I don't like the latter part either.

@chris
You can use Google maps on graphene, but many of us refuse to be tracked and steered by Google. Organic maps works well enough.

@nitrokey
Props and much success to offering a commercially available non-Goopple phone! DIY flashing is daunting for many.

I look forward to future Android solutions on more open HW as well as Linux phone maturity.

Google is expected to pay Apple $15B this year to embed its spyware on Iphones. Apple will also be installing its own new spyware on devices. Investors are pleased and Apple stock price hits new all time high.

@chris Luckily my partner and parents were not already too deep. I was able to get them onto FOSS with a bit of convincing and hand holding. I love them for being patient. I gave up on some teenagers who should have been educated on the traps before being given devices. They are in way too deep already, but they are starting to think about what I tell them. Whether they know it or appreciate it yet, our family members are lucky to have us.
