Last week I published a post on whether I would go back to Linux. I wrote that before Apple's privacy pivot so today's post is revisiting the topic: chriswiegman.com/2021/08/apple

@chris
I love reading others' experiences.

Setting expectations and re-evaluating values and priorities helped myself and family. Our FOSS solutions will rarely have all the features and pretty screens of megatech, but the trade off is worth it.

We think we need all kinds of services, and this really needs to be questioned. Five or ten years ago we lived just fine(perhaps even better) without these perceived needs. Taking some steps back has been fine, though requiring adjustment.

@krock Thanks! I totally get that. Now I'm just hoping I can convince the others to a level that this will work. Supporting others is so much more difficult than just needing to support yourself

@chris I feel you! Trying to reason with kids who think they need some of these things is a trap these companies put us in. Tictok is like Lucky Charms. Kids scream at their parents for it in the grocery store.

@krock HA! I have one son, he's 24 and has a degree in CS. It's my 70+ year old parents and my wife that are the problems :/

@chris Luckily my partner and parents were not already too deep. I was able to get them onto FOSS with a bit of convincing and hand holding. I love them for being patient. I gave up on some teenagers who should have been educated on the traps before being given devices. They are in way too deep already, but they are starting to think about what I tell them. Whether they know it or appreciate it yet, our family members are lucky to have us.
