local slavery history

Mynydd Cilfái (Kilvey Hill), out a little way east of here, had Maesteg House [1] built at its foot. Pascoe St Leger Grenfell [2] owned it and the family's tin and copper smelting business here in Swansea. He originally came from Buckinghamshire from a family of wealth and power.

While Grenfell's father apparently supported William Wilberforce in the abolition of slavery [3], neither father nor son released the 348 people they were keeping in slavery in Jamaica until it became illegal in Britain in 1833, whereupon Grenfell applied for compensation and received the modern equivalent of £500 000 [4]. The 348 were not compensated.

The reboots need to be agreed because the modules live in Pine64 Clusterboard and there's no way to reboot it from the operating system. Reboot command on a single SOpine results in it basically going to sleep until power cycled on the whole board.

Three SOpine to rent for if anyone is interested. Each is 4x CPU cores, 2GB RAM, 32GB SD disk, running Armbian 20.11.6 (equivalent to Ubuntu 20.04.2 Focal).

€15/each/month

Terms of service: reboots only in an agreed maintenance window, no stuff illegal in UK, no spam.

Processor : AArch64 Processor rev 4 (aarch64)
Hardware : sun50iw1p1
BogoMIPS : 48.00

The other modules I have are running stuff like Matrix Synapse, PostgrerSQL and IPFS so they're pretty capable.

Massive anti-Putin protests in now. Most are grim, with beating and arrests. Vladivostok stands out - as police blocked all town center so people moved to a large frozen lake nearby. And started to dance in a circle, a Russian tradition called хоровод. So there came a police boat (that drives on ice) but the engine failed and it stopped. So people started to dance the circle around the boat 😄

@jeder Google understands federation and they knew exactly what they were doing when they banned Element.

I've asked this a few times: Doesn't anti-trust laws apply if you run an app store and you offer your own apps in that store and you ban competing apps for reasons that don't seem to apply to your own apps?

You can use Google Chrome to access Matrix servers, just like you can use it to access Fediverse sites. It's not like you actually need to use the Element app for anything..

Generally, there's two types of union workers: the kind who understand the meaning of the union--the solidarity, the collective security, etc.--and take it seriously.

And then there's the settler types who think being union means you get to stand around, do nothing, and get paid well because you "made it" man, you're in (rather than realizing we need to be more efficient to compete with non-union companies).

I hate the second type with a passion.

Don't know how to code but still want to contribute to open projects? Consider open street maps!

OSM is the community built map of the world. Anyone can edit the map and all the data is freely available and usable in any of your projects.

Start in your own neighborhood. Maybe your street is missing or named wrong. Update the corner shop hours. Map the parks or sidewalks. Anything helps and many hands make light work!

>Google have suspended Element in the Play Store without notifying us; we’re reaching out to find out what’s going on. Apologies for the inconvenience; in the interim there’s https://f-droid.org/en/packages/im.vector.app/ but it’s a few versions behind. We’ll post updates here.

>As of 11:44 UTC we’ve submitted a detailed appeal to reiterate that Element is a generic chat app for connecting to the global Matrix communication network, just as Chrome is a generic web browser for connecting to the Web - and just as Google does not control the content on the Web, Element does not control the content on Matrix. https://element.io/blog/element-on-google-play-store/

Never forget that Google and all of its employees are bullies.
