The joy when you suspect a stealth crypto mining rootkit eating your server's 99% CPU but it comes out to be only a loose power supply cable! 😀

OnionShare

onionshare.org/

"Securely and anonymously share files of any size. A web server is started, making OnionShare accessible as a Tor Onion Service, potentially temporarily or in a stealthy manner, over the Internet. An unguessable address is generated and is shared for the recipient to open in the Tor Browser to download the files. No separate server or third party file-sharing service required. You host the files on your own computer."

There's a GUI, but the CLI is so good, just `onionshare somestuff.bin` and you get a temporary onion service serving a static password protected website with the file made available. By default once the file has been downloaded, everything shuts down.

#TIL about #AcademicTorrents:

"Making over 65TB of research data available!

We've designed a distributed system for sharing enormous datasets - for researchers, by researchers. The result is a scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant repository for data, with blazing fast download speeds."

Stuart Christie died today - an awesome #anarchist, who tried to kill Franco in 1964 in #Spain, avoided death penalty and was helping for years the struggle to bring down the fascist regime! Rest in power comrade. You will never be forgotten!

Somehow only just realized that Firefox lets me override websites that disable right-clicking by holding Shift before I right-click.

nheko, a Matrix client, just merged code for voice calls. AFAIK, this is the first community-powered client with VoIP support ever.

> You will need to build Nheko yourself. Currently we do not have GStreamer available in our CI pipeline, so we disabled support for voice calls in those builds (apart from the flatpak build, but that also needs some further validation and a new GStreamer release). We will release proper builds with VOIP support once GStreamer is actually released and available with the fixes we need.

Anyone from China or Hong Kong? I just need a small connectivity test to a website here...

They are also reporting that police introduced "color" stickers. Yellow for problematic ones, red for alternative looking (punk rockers and so on) and the ones who resist most. Violence in the prison was used against you depending on the sticker.

(CW Violence) Regime started releasing prisoners in the middle of the night. A lot of people are reporting about horrible conditions: 50 people in cell for 4, systematic violence, blood pouring in corridors. #Belarus

Dear Mastodon, please welcome my good (and I mean, in person!) 🇵🇱 colleague @xyzzy who has just joined the distributed social network 👍

Matrix proponents would do well to learn from what is happening to Firefox and Mozilla.

Element do 90% of the development in the Matrix ecosystem - including the only server that can run at scale (I wont say "work") and the only homeserver designed to replace it (not production ready).

If Element were to come on hard times (as they have in the past, with near disastrous results), Matrix will simply fold.

In 1920 Poland in a desperate effort defeated Red Army who approached Warsaw in their Westward campaign (1918-1920) and resulted in Soviet occupation of Baltics, Belarus and Ukraine. They still came back for Poland in 1939, but at least the damage inflicted lasted 50 rather than 70 years. Norman Davies discusses the impact of that battle on its 100th anniversary.

Uh oh

Since January, a group has been hijacking Tor exit relay nodes to perform SSL stripping attacks, peaking in May when the group ran 23.95% of all nodes
