A nice #COVID19 impact summary
COVID hospitalisations breakdown on 9 August 2021 in Houston Medical Center
Out of 81 hospitalised, 9 vaccinated and 72 unvaccinated
Out of 23 in the ICU, 23 unvaccinated, zero vaccinated
Out of 11 on ventilators, 11 unvaccinated, zero vaccinated
From the top of the hill?
Poland introduces high financial prize for people who come up and report their employers to the tax authorities for untaxed payments.
The problem is however that the labour tax is primarily impacting the *employee.* For an average monthly salary of 5000 PLN the effective tax rate is 30% since the income tax allowance is *very* low in Poland and national insurance tax is actually *regressive.*
It would be resistant to DPI only with ECH, which is still in draft.
A lone tourist with improvised SRT (rope climbing/descending) equipment was found at -1100 m in Veryovkina cave in Abkhazia. He most likely died there last year (!) after being unable to pass a technically demanding rope sections.
Everything in this story just screams "WTF". You never go caving alone, and you never go to a vertical cave without proper SRT equipment, skills and fitness. Veryovkina is like Chomolungma in among climbers.

@guenther Thanks, I don't understand what she was talking - just referring to the comment she made in header.
German "climate activist" gives a real feel of a messianic cult that #Energiewende has become:
> Niemand schlägt ernsthaft vor Deutschland solle ~alleine~ die Welt retten.
> Nobody seriously suggests Germany should save the world ~ alone ~.
You are *not* "saving the world", Louisa. Germany's CO2 emissions per kWh are as usual 5x higher than those of France, and Germany still plans to shut down 8GW of #nuclear power 🤦♂️

In a research I've seen in Poland a decade ago, the holy water containers in churches had significant concentration of E. coli bacteria (apparently from hands unwashed after using toilet).

Great article about the new CSAM + privacy concerns that are coming to iOS devices.
I like how #IPCC presents results of multi-disciplinary scientific research in terms of probabilities.
Every statement and forecast is annotated by likelihood (certain/likely etc) and confidence about its conclusion.
I think that's very much the direction where all other science-based policy should be heading. I think IPCC has created a precedent and a model for future global research on other global topics (e.g. disease controls).
The screenshot above is an emergency number calls record, and has various complaints - starting from someone denouncing "a group of people shouting FREE BELARUS" through another person complaining they weren't given voting protocol at election site, up to "NEIGHBOUR'S CAT DAMAGES PROPERTY" 😂
@vfrmedia I get the same, most likely some issues with disk space on the instance I'm using - try this thread on Twitter https://twitter.com/TadeuszGiczan/status/1424734523519025152?s=20
A group calling themselves “Belarusian Cyber-partisans” made a massive data breach in #Belarus 🇧🇾 Ministry of Internal Affairs.
They claim they acquired tons of information about police operations against opposition, audio recordings of calls, details of "web brigades" etc.
These will be very likely now published by opposition media like NEXTA.
Scientific publications, like IPCC, do change minds of people - they did change mine like ~10 years ago for example. In my case it was specifically studies about carbon isotopes that quite convincingly demonstrated that the CO2 found today in atmosphere is largely of fossil origins.
Even in terms of daily pollution but also worst-case accident pollution nuclear fleet is objectively safer than what we use today. In Kursk disaster in 2001 the submarine was blown up and hull broke in two parts, yet the reactors safely shut down and were later picked up with no leaks. Diesel ships are polluting the sea with regular leaks and especially during accidents all the time.
The shipping industry is currently source of massive amounts of CO2 and pollution (as it runs on heavy diesel) emissions.
#nuclear propelled container ships such as this Sevmorput 🇷🇺 are the low-carbon and low-emission answer to this challenge.
Greenpeace has been talking about sails and batteries, but even their own ships run on diesel as EV ships are simply infeasible from technical point of view.
