Just noticed a funny Easter egg in "The Interview" (2014), at 1:38 they're escaping in a tank that has "Пан или пропал" written on it. The phrase literally means "Either lord, or loser", a proverbial expression describing a risky choice ending in only one of two extreme outcomes.

The word "пан" (pan) originates from Polish where it's mostly uses as a formal variant of "you" (a bit like "sir") and since Soviet times it's mostly used with a smirk.

@Wtebbens That's very nice, actually! I'd love to see something like that in the UK. Unfortunately here all mesh & community networks seem to have been ultimately killed by chilling effect of RIPA surveillance regulation. I don't think it would actually apply to community networks but there were rumours being spread - basically that it's enough to route someone else's ping to go to jail for 100 years. And people in UK are rather risk averse ;)

@kravietz True that, but that is a different discussion. Community networks like guifi.net can have commercial operators on top of it.
In Catalonia we're running a little cooperative business to help municipalities to deploy, maintain and train with #LoRaWAN infra. All investment helps grow the community network - xoic.coop

@piotrsikora

Nowe elektrownie wodne w Polsce, czy w ogóle w Europie, mają małe szanse - nikt się nie zgodzi na zalanie jeszcze kilku dolin górskich jak np. Solina. Duża gęstość zaludnienia + demokracja + wymierna wartość biosfery dla ludności.

@Wtebbens

Precisely so. Although in the UK the uptake of public LoRaWAN gateways is... limited. In my town there's literally a few, with very limited range, run by hobbyists. But a decent LoRaWAN gateway *and* antenna *and* high location cost money.

@kravietz my take on Helium: since 2015 we have the open #communitynetwork TheThingsNetwork where peers share their gateways and everyone has free access. >100 thousand people are sharing 1000s of gateways covering at least partially the main cities.

Then comes Helium. They build private networks where people have to pay for access. That's basically reverting back from a community approach to a market exchange model.

I don't buy that. You?

Ecco perché il #nucleare sarebbe necessario, pulito e non pericoloso
''Se si vanno a vedere i numeri, l’impatto ambientale del nucleare è assolutamente paragonabile a quello delle energie #rinnovabili, con l’ulteriore vantaggio che l’atomo non ha il problema dell’intermittenza, che invece è il motivo primario per cui oggi non si può pensare di fare tutto con solare ed #eolico.''

@michiel

Whether that's "socially useful" is questionable or, more precisely, highly uncertain.

Helium business model seems to be to run an alternative to the public network of LoRaWAN gateways, using the same protocol, just running a private network.

Get paid by IoT operators, pay out to gateway owners and keep 30%.

That's no different from any other franchise, just with fancy architecture added. Is it going to work? No idea.

@michiel

Yes, especially the proof-of-connectivity is an interesting concept, and it indeed seems to work, as people can earn tokens by both running gateways, and verifying their connectivity.

Anyone tried Helium (HNT)? This seems to be basically a private LoRaWAN network where providing running a gateway mines you crypto-currency tokens. Proof of work is replaced by proof of connectivity, power usage by a miner is 5W, especially relevant in the context of debate

Wrote a little doc for SSH CA and host keys/certificates. Mostly so that I can have something to point at that's hopefully easier to read than SSH documentation.

Note they actually do take your arguments into account in the Impact Analysis (pages 106+). I fully support your position, and it should be reinforced by other projects, but their assurances don't look bad at this stage.

if you are using exiftool filter with pleroma, please update your exiftool. a remote code execution vulnerability was discovered https://devcraft.io/2021/05/04/exiftool-arbitrary-code-execution-cve-2021-22204.html

you can check if it is used in your config, config :pleroma, Pleroma.Upload, filters should contain Pleroma.Upload.Filter.ExifTool

Yes, they do it and they will do whatever they like to maximise their profits and minimise risks. So they certainly will not only add more ads but also remove content they don't like and kick youtubers that bring regulation or bad publicity.
