So as you can see the fact that there's a strong progressive part of society in Russia doesn't mean that there is no strong anti-progressive and pro-authoritarian fraction, which there clearly is.

And it needs to be accounted for, just like you can't make politics in Poland pretending that the strong ultra-conservative Roman-Catholic fraction doesn't exist, which also happens to be ~30%.

@EdwardTorvalds

This is largely a philosophical discussion - a patch that fakes a digital signature is certainly not something that looks good from security point of view, but that's only if you ignore the whole business context (=Google enforcing its monopoly with Google Services) and the patch has a very well-defined and limited scope.

@EdwardTorvalds

MicroG cannot be installed, as it requires a patch to fake Google signatures. This patch is rejected for example by LineageOS, which is why there's a separate fork of Lineage with MicroG integrated lineage.microg.org/

But he's completely ignoring the fact that these regulations already exist in 27 Member States of EU, already with no court supervision or no appeal process. What TERREG does is to bring order into this mess and create an uniform process with guaranteed rights.

@EdwardTorvalds I'm using signal on e.foundation ROM (MicroG) all the time and it works perfectly.

So far the largest political challenge in Russia was "if not Putin then whom", as Putin has very effectively removed (sometimes physically) any alternatives. "United Russia" became a silly collection of celebrities (welcome Yulia from "Tatu" this year), gangsters and FSB operatives.

Dissolution of Navalny organisation now has a potential to fill this gap by creating thousands of these alternatives, who are already gaining experience in local elections.

Decentralisation will give these activists a chance to become much more confident and build their own brands.

Russian society has a strong tendency towards cult of personality. which is exactly how Putin was born, and how Navalny had a strong chance to become another Putin (even if the didn't want to).

In a few years time Putin will not face a single Navalny, but thousands of political activists with their own names and with well-established local networks.

Leonid Volkov explains what is happening to Navalny organisation after it was declared "extremist" - local branches will stop being "Navalny branches" and become 100% independent political organisations.

I think importance of this transition cannot be overstated - Navalny movement already holds on thousands of local activists, who are very close to the people and highlight issues such as infrastructure, roads, waste management, spatial planning etc.

@isagalaev Consider this as an analogue of discussions in other domains.

We know that the influenza virus exists. We know that there are non-human reservoir pools (it co-evolves in birds and swine, if not other animals as well).

What we've determined here is that if you disrupt the conditions necessary for it to propagate among humans you can virtually eliminate it within the human population, and reduce deaths by 97%.

As an analogue, we know that the viewpoints, thoughts, and expressions that occur via algorithmic social media exist without it. But somehow the addition of that highly-effective and "engagement-generating" distribution system has overwhelmingly toxic effects.

(Both viruses and memes are information transmission under selective pressure with behavioural consequences.)
