@kravietz ah yeah that makes sense, ENS does a lot of bookkeeping under the hood that shouldn't have been handled on-chain. I think ENS is a neat idea but it was conceived at a time that nobody really gave a shit about fees or doing things in layer-2 protocols, which is really unfortunate and now there's not really a way to solve it without either ripping up a bunch of existing infrastructure or just waiting for eth2. normal eth transfers can be done for under $5 (and less on weekends), which is still way more than it should be but that's being still addressed

handshake is neat and is a lot cheaper to register names on, but it's its own chain with its own native asset and unfortunately probably won't be not-pow anytime soon.

Although I probably will also need to look into bridging some of my favourite scientific Twitter feeds into Mastodon somehow...

Leaving Twitter and WhatsApp is a gradual process:

1) Dumped all my Twitter data and imported it into ElasticSearch and images into IPFS. 10 years of valuable rants and arguments cannot be just lost.

2) For now I only keep WhatsApp for *one* guy (who owes me money). Everyone else migrated to Signal, Matrix and Telegram (which I have bridged to Matrix anyway).

@lunch This is ens.domains/ where any change to ENS record requires what I understand is signature done with your ETH key. They amount of ETH sent as displayed in MetaMask is shown as $0 but the gas is tens of $$$.

landlords being landlords

@vfrmedia @thamesynne @wolfie

I ordered a smart meter from Bulb and had their engineer coming 4 (four) times before he gave up and said I have old meter with tin-covered tails on which he cannot legally install it.

So then I had a certified engineer (ordered online from Able Group) replace the fuse board to a modern one with RCD, and just today had Bulb coming again and now enjoying the smart meter eventually.

@hamjb@mstdn.social I don't think anybody in the cryptocurrencies world gives a f... about CO2, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. I suspect the *only* think it correlates is the BTC price.

@wolfie

If you own a house you could happily have a 1942 fuse board and not legally required to replace it.

If you are a landlord you should be upgrading it during the inspections but obviously landlords would delay this because they don't care if you're electrocuted or not, as long as they're legally compliant.

in 2021 🤷 This is the network fee to sign a smart contract without sending any ETH 😂

deadly ice swimming accident in berlin

So if there are other icedippers here: never do that. Never go in an ice hole where you can’t put your feet on the ground (make another ice hole, if necessary) and bring a ladder to get out.

Hundreds of media in Poland 🇵🇱 have shut down for 24h today to protest against a new "solidarity tax" which will impose preferential treatment to large media companies and state media.

I have just tried the Pale Moon web browser and my first impression is that it's *very* fast and has all the modern web features you'd expect without the disadvantages like tracking etc.

Pale Moon is actually a fork of Firefox using Goanna browser engine which is a fork of Gecko.
