Personal note: the online experience of #FOSDEM2021 beats any other conference so far. I got to know new people and had many interesting discussions. High quality content. Excellent work by the organizers! Thank you.

Mam osobiście do niej sentyment :)

Cuban 🇨🇺 ruling party has been hit so hard by lack of dollars from wealthy western tourists coming for cheap booze and island fun, that it graciously expanded the list of sectors of economy where private enterprises are allowed. So far, there were 127 of them, now it will be over 2000.

It's what China did, only in 80's, rather than 2021.

🇪🇺 To be honest, Borrell was just incompetent. He took part in a carefully staged show and came up as completely naive and unprepared. In the press conference both Lavrov and Sputnik played well-written roles, while Borrell was looking completely lost and mumbled something random in response to the questions. Each of which was a perfect opportunity to push EU position, and each of them was wasted.

Here are some vital stats from the fosdem.org Matrix server from Day 2 of @FOSDEM@twitter.com, fresh from Grafana...

If you're Polish, Czech or Slovak, and grew up in 80-90's you'll be certainly puzzled by this 🤔

:boost_ok: It's time to #DeleteWhatsApp - but how do you explain your friends & family in short and simple terms what the alternatives are besides running to Telegram or Signal? 🤔

In light of the absence of good summaries I've written an introduction to this much debated topic - hope you find it useful! Please share it if you want to 😊

Russian activist Alyona Kitayeva had a plastic bag put on her head on a police station, strangulated, shaken and threatened. Infamous state propaganda channel host Solovyev invites an "expert" who explains she was not strangulated with a plastic bag but... the police "let her breathe into a paper bag because she was hyperventilating" 🤷 Kitayeva of course clearly describes threats and strangulation.

Very pleased with #fosdem virtual conference setup

Video feed runs just fine, can be sent to a TV through Chromecast, watch it directly from streaming URL, etc

Chat application (mobile and web) through Matrix is nice and simple, with a widget and bot to help with the schedule

You can find detailed information on the methodology in the linked article.

The story from 2019 that we should be talking about all the time:

"A security flaw in WhatsApp can be, and has been, exploited to inject spyware into victims' smartphones: all a snoop needs to do is make a booby-trapped voice call to a target's number, and they're in. The victim doesn't need to do a thing other than leave their phone on."

This article highlights all fundamental issues with business model but misses one particular issue, which actually made me remove WhatsApp from my primary phone: security exploits used for surveillance, as it was the case in 2019. The app is a closed-source binary blob that is analysed mostly by highly motivated and well-funded researchers, who sell exploits on zero-day market, leaving users exposed.

@kev
The problem is with us not understanding the root cause. It was centralization that forced and still forcing so many people to stick to #WhatsApp. Both #Telegram and #Signal is centralized. It takes away our choices to move to better apps and services by locking us to a single provider. Times like these are an opening for us to teach people about this fundamental issue. But we are losing that opportunity if we settle with Telegram, Signal or other centralized services.

I have been using it for a year or so - although "used" is a bit of an overstatement since it just sits in my Firefox add-ons tab and does it job without any intervention. Which means I very rarely even see hCaptcha prompts - as opposed to reCaptcha which routinely pisses me off beyond imagination as Google seems to be making it extra annoying when you load it from Firefox.
