As consequence, P2P networks with explicit follow & forward mechanisms (as in Mastodon and SSB), offer probably the most effective tool for democratically driven prevention of vocal minorities taking over the public debate.

If hate speech is condemned by the majority of participants, they will simply execute their right not to forward it further through the network.

Now, if particular hate speech is however *not* condemned, then the problem is not at all in the network architecture...

In this NYT feature the P2P networks are basically pictured as a slower alternative to centralised social media outlets, zero mention of what P2P is really about:

This is quite disappointing, as it completely misses the point of peer-to-peer communications which actually enable everyone to exercise not only their free speech, but also the less known logical extension of free speech being the right *not* to listen (aka "right against compelled listening").

The debate about hate speech on #p2p what is barely mentioned is the absolutely key feature of P2P:

In P2P network *you* route other people's messages. If you don't like them, you don't route them and they're no longer propagating through the network through your node.

In case of the 2020 report that focuses on #ssb there's a single barely visible mention of this fundamental feature ("refusing to propagate their messages"):

@michal W przypadku Matrixa sprawa jest o wiele prostsza bo jeśli Element obsługuje "pełne" E2EE a np. Nheko pół roku temu nie obsługiwał, to nie obsługiwał go wcale i sprawa była jasna. Teraz zaimplementowali E2EE w Nheko i bez problemu dogaduje się z Elementem bo to ten sam standard a nie jedno z 50 rozszerzeń.

@michal Ja używałem XMPP w czasach przed-matriksowych i przed-signalowych ale jako standard ma on masę problemów. Przede wszystkim nie ma jednego standardu XMPP tylko prawie 500 (!) https://xmpp.org/extensions/ z czego chyba 5 dotyczy szyfrowania, jeszcze inne multimediów, załączników itd. W związku z czym historycznie każdy klient implementował inny podzbiór z w/w, więc jak miałeś kumpla, z klientem GPG to na 100% drugi miał klienta z OMEMO ale bez GPG. I tak dalej.

@mkljczk No nie, nie chodzi o odkrywczość - raczej o takie wrażenie jakby słuchać w knajpie faceta żyjącego z uprawiania nierządu, który tłumaczy, że robi X bo ma lepszą stawkę za numer.

@yavinlecretin Nie pamiętam już, to była cała sieć - jeden z nich nazywał się hnews.pl ale już nie istnieje. W archiwum FB mam te:

Ale ich modus operandi polegał na generowaniu coraz to nowych i promowaniu ich przez reklamy na FB, więc mogły być ich setki. Właścicielem była wtedy ta spółka:

🇵🇱 Kiedyś, jak jeszcze byłem na Facebooku, to wyśledziłem redakcję sieci serwisów publikujących klasyczne fake news, jadących na najniższych instynktach ksenofobii i nacjonalizmu. No i znalazłem też właściciela, a potem opublikowałem szczegółową notatkę o związkach między tymi serwisami no i otagowałem tego bęcwała. Co zdumiewające, odpowiedział i to "z serca"...
