The problem is that education needs to work on different levels. There's baseline education provided by schools, and there's education on particular topics. The former is pretty good, the latter has been abandoned completely, at least in UK and Poland. There were no public campaigns in either country on any of the controversial topics for decades. This battle was lost by walkover.

The 5g conspiracy craziness are but the latest example showing that a civilization's technological progress is hard-limited at any given time by the quality of education a median member of the society has received.

@mplammers @rysiek

Now, if the authors of that appeal are linking a (legitimate) scientific article about negative impact of microwave radar on human health in the context of 5G, this clearly demonstrates that they have no idea what they're talking about.

A typical radar has power measured in thousands of Watts. A microwave ovens are 800-900 Watts. A typical 5G cell is 250 milliWatts. A typical WiFi is 20 milliWatts.

@mplammers @rysiek

If you have a "legitimate concern" about exposure to electromagnetic radiation you should be probably living in a cave 100 m underground. For the last 4.5 billions of years Earth is literally flooded in electromagnetic radiation of all frequencies, and this is precisely environment in which homo sapiens has evolved to live.

@freemo

Perhaps the most enlightening statement on this I saw was from Zeev Sternhell who once wrote that the biggest mistake of 20th century philosophers was to underestimate the power of nationalism and other tribal instincts and overestimate rationality.

People can not only die for but they can also live in shithole (sometimes literally) only for even an elusive feeling of their tribe "being in control".

What can you do with such compatriots? 😂

@freemo

US position here is actually quite similar to the position of Russia (albeit with more dire consequences): "we're a global superpower, we need to invest into foreign policy".

Which is precisely what is happening: US or Russia can blackhole billions of dollars in some idiotic foreign war while their internal policy is in deep shit, with schools and hospitals tragically underfunded.

@kravietz Yes it always amazes me how no matter where you are in the world the groups which lean strongly towards one agenda or another (label themselves as left or right adamatly) tend to be completely clueless as to the reality of the situation.

Politics around the world is more about propaganda than facts, sadly.

but yea, I pay a much lower tax rate overall in europe than I would in America. Like I said I know a great many people who have fled america to livein Europe and paying less taxes and being at the top of the tax bracket is something I hear quite often.

But in other ways too, europe is far more conservative (aka, small government, less intervention and regulations) when it comes to foreign affairs too, as is seen by the fact that they have fewer military bases around the world and invest less money in trying to regulate or intervene in other countries as well.

@freemo

> I pay significantly higher taxes at the highest tax bracket than I do in europe

Ok, so *this* comes as a surprise because in the libertarian circles US is presented as a practically tax haven, while EU is portrayed as some kind of new USSR that takes almost all of your income in the form of tax :)

@freemo

European social-democratic paradigm is reduction of income inequality. This is achieved by income taxation that is high for high-income earners (up to 50%) and low or zero for low-income earners, commonly known as progressive taxation (not because it's politically progressive, but because tax rate increases with absolute income).

So when you hear someone talking about "we pay lower/higher tax in EU" the first question is how much they earn in absolute terms.

@freemo

I'm afraid you confused me even more 😂 Can we just talk in objective economic terms like "high" vs "low income tax"?

Otherwise it's practically impossible on semantic level to determine what people are talking about - like "you know, the policy that some people calling themselves neo-liberals proposed" but this is totally different between countries and changing in time. Unlike Marxism, there's no canonical scripture of neo-liberalism or neo-conservatism...

@freemo

I'm confused by your usage of terms "liberal" and "conservative". Especially the second paragraph makes completely zero sense to me. EU in generally income taxation is progressive (=the more you earn the more you pay as percentage of income) but also has a high tax free threshold (=earn less than 12 GBP per year, pay no tax). But what does it have to do with "liberal" and "conservative"?

@sptnkmmnt @rf

The best setup I've found with exactly these assumptions is HP MicroServer with Ubuntu and 4 TB HDD in ZFS mirror array. MicroServer has 4 trays so I had a small SDD to boot Ubuntu from it and 2 HDD at this moment, but there's space for a 3rd one if I feel paranoid. And ZFS has deduplication, compression, encryption.

The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months

theguardian.com/books/2020/may

A reader comment worth noting:

"‘Lord of flies’ has direct link w Garret Hardin’s ’Tragedy of Commons’, Ayn Rand individualism. 6 Tongan boys demonstrated Elinor Ostrom‘s ‘Management of the Commons’ in which she debunked Hardin’s malign rhetoric. Too bad Ostrom (Nobel ‘09) is not basis of Economics courses"

@dump_stack

Ok, I'm not going to translate this one - couldn't imitate this pseudo-intellectual dialogue in English convincingly 😂

Now, what if towers are in reality orgone* generators? 🤔
