"Algorithms and digital technologies constantly collect data and evaluate us and sometimes make life changing decisions such as credit, housing and employment.  Advertisements play a crucial part in this in that they inform us about goods and services, opportunities, products or nudge us into certain behaviours."

@freemo In case of USA it's unlikely because of patents, it's because of NDA enforced oligopoly on imports. I suppose the same insulin can be purchased for pennies outside of US.

Second popular technique of drug price boosting in the US is introduction of slightly modified variant of the same drug which *is* patented and then again using NDA to force doctors to move to the new, patented variant.

Both of these are only possibly because of active participation of NDA.

The messenger #Wire and the web search service #Startpage have been taken over US companies. They are/were popular services in the privacy and #cryptoparty scene. Both companies appear to be interested in the data business. Takeovers like these will happen again. If these events teach us anything it is that we should seek decentral and self-hosted alternatives to take back control. Don't put your trust into centralized services!

@jonw It's not really odd from their point of view - they use it to quantitatively check how big problem it is for users. If not big, they can just continue doing what they are doing. If big, they will run another "your privacy is important to us" propaganda campaign

I feel vindicated that even Facebook knows its ads may "know too much". That's an odd option...
