"We find that the lost nuclear electricity production due to the phase-out was replaced primarily by coal-fired production and net electricity imports. The social cost of this shift from #nuclear to coal is approximately 12 billion dollars per year. Over 70% of this cost comes from the increased mortality risk associated with exposure to the local air pollution emitted when burning fossil fuels." https://www.nber.org/papers/w26598.pdf
In 1983 there was a huge panic in UK caused by a increased rate of #leukemia among children living near on particular nuclear site (Sescale). Media were fast to jump to conclusion, ignoring science which couldn't explain the cause back then, but pointed out similar clusters elsewhere far from any nuclear installations and insisted nuclear is unrelated.
Today we know it was particular infection that caused it and #nuclear was indeed unrelated.
This three part highly acclaimed documentary series, produced in 1986, examines the pro's and con's of #nuclear power as they have never been examined before...or since. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/detail/B01DDEOKCI
"Without nuclear, there will be 500m tonnes of extra #co2 emissions every year in Europe, which is more than the emissions of UK or France alone." - open letter by James E Hansen and others.
#nuclear is 50% of EU clean electricity. No need to make the transition more difficult on ideological grounds.

A comparison of various energy sources - solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, gas, coal, geothermal - as to their CO2 emissions, material usage and waste generation. Very detailed and packed with data.

"global #nuclear power has prevented an average of 1.84 million air pollution-related deaths and 64 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent (GtCO2-eq) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that would have resulted from fossil fuel burning" co-authori is J. Hansen, one of the top global warming scientists https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es3051197
