1 September 1983 #USSR shot down South Korean passenger KAL 007. For a week USSR denied it completely. Then they argued it was not a civilian plane but a spy plane. The plane was shot down in international air space and USSR shortly identified the place of the crash and dragged remains using trawlers. Only in 1992 USSR declassified documents and transcripts from the military command showing the shoot down was done in mistake.
