they used to only put ads on >10 minute videos, subsequently >8 minutes and for those who had opted into advertising on their channels and sharing revenue (which recently was only made available to more popular channels with larger subscribers). This suggests Google aren't making as much money as before (and are worried about increasing regulation).
TBH I could easily see the lot going the same way as the Library of Alexandria when it becomes less profitable..
